Unpleasant surprise
Last weekend Donna says the water heater isn't working on electric, gas is ok so I wait till we got home to trouble shoot it. Find the breaker is tripped, reset it but still no heat. Trace the circuit and no AC to the element. Trace back to the ac switch in the WH and no AC. Look at the schematic and discover that there is a relay in the junction box on the heater. Of course it's on the side that's not directly accessible. I order a replacement relay on Amazon and yesterday proceed to pull the heater about 10 inches to get access to the junction box, below is what I found. The first picture is the AC wire that feeds the relay, it has a small nick where it was up against the ground screw and was burned back past the wire nut into the feed line by almost 2 inches. The second picture is the wire nut from the neutral side, the hot side only had the spring wire remaining. Glad the junction box, ground and circuit breaker did the job. By the way the relay is fine.

Unpleasant surprise, I would say! Sounds like you did a nice job troubleshooting and fixing.

Curious. I know it is switch to 120 vac, but is the relay coil 120 vac or 12 vdc?

The coil is 12vdc. Took me a while to figure it out, the coil is on the dc schematic and the switch is on the AC schematic.

Yep, been there done that. Most don't realize the switch inside for the Electric side of the HW heater is a 12V switch and it controls the relay on the heater. AC runs direct from the breaker panel to the relay.
