My personal card has a limit of 3k. I keep enough cash to get me home if almost any thing goes wrong, read a few thousand. Every body will except cash and a lot of times give a nice discount.

Ozz, I was thinking the same thing, always want the DW to have enough for bail and 2 hours of lawyers fees, just to get things rolling. And I promise not to leave the state, now were did I park that truck and trailer.

Yep, we roll along in life, everything running normal and smooth, then up jumps the devil. If you don't have cash and need it, not good.. If you have it and don't need it, no foul.
What if you were out in no-where land and someone drops a bomb on someone and it all hits the fan.. would you feel all warm and fuzzy with plastic, or a bit of cash in your shoe..
I'm jus sayin..

I'd agree with many others, we carry no more than $100 in cash. Many places will still take a personal check when they say "cash only" - or you pay for one night and then get more cash the next day.

We are fulltimers so our needs may be different than yours- We have debit and credit cards at our disposal- I withdraw $100.00 when my cash on hand is $20.00 or less- Cash is used for minor purchases such as lunch or a haircut- Credit card is used for fuel, groceries, camping fees and other expenses over $20.00- I have a background in accounting and keep a daily ledger so I always know the health of my bank account- Incidentally, we use a bank chain that is national in coverage rather than a credit union or regional bank- JMHO- Don

Boy I guess I am the exception. Anytime I travel I only use cash. I hardly ever use plastic for anything. I figure what I plan to spend on the trip and bring that much cash. I just don't trust having my bank account number out there everywhere I go.

We always have our "Bail Money Fund" with us when we travel. We have never needed it but it is nice to know we have if something really left field happens and you need some cash FAST! I typically walk around with $100 cash. Wife typically carries a little less. Everything goes on the AMEX. Carry a M/C just in case AMEX is not accepted. Walk around money can last all month easily.
Cash is good to have though. Just last week outside of Old Town in San Diego we pull in to a gas station. Jump out to start to pump and I can't find the card reader. Turns out they were a cash only facility. Can't remember the last time I paid cash to purchase fuel. $20 does not buy as much gas as it use to ......

Full timers since the middle of 04. I never carry much cash. I have had up to $200 a couple times but normally have only about $50 or $60. We have a credit card backed debit card and 3 other credit cards. I also carry another relic of the past, a checkbook. I offer to write a check to save the dealer / park the card fee. It's up to them. So far a book of checks lasts about 10 to 18 months. There has only been one time when we needed a fair amount of cash and there was an ATM machine handy. I don't worry about bail. It's gonna be their problem if they decide to keep me overnight. I'd bet they regret it in the mornin.

Its that green stuff that cries every time I open up the thing holding my credit cards! I take 4-$100 bills with me on trips and try to see how long I can keep all 4 of them. Usually about 2 months 'til I have to return home and replenish.

Again, we carry a few thousand. We have found that there are bargains out there where cash is king. We bought a car the other day because we had the cash; it will sit in storage when we are gone.
