Help with Dexter bearing seals
During routine maintenance I found one of the bearing seals leaking and grease all over the brake assembly. It is a Dexter axle but looking at the Dexter site the seals for the 8 lug bearing assembly (Part# K71-386-00) are $90 !!! this seems very excessive when I see other seals ranging from $3 - $24 - is this right???
Also the leads to the magnet had come loose and torn apart - clips gone (Or non existent to start with)
Have it all cleaned up with new leads and clips but need to replace the seal.

Markwick,
The price for the replacement seal does sound excessive. I'd check with a local good trailer shop to see what they charge.

Most parts places that handle bearings and seals should be able to find ones that fit or tell you who would handle them.

My 07 3295 uses the part number 010-036-00 seal. I agree the price of $90. is high

Is there a link that walks you through the process of packing the wheel bearings and checking the brakes,I have a appointment to have this done and it's costing me a arm and a leg for what seems a easy process.

Markwick, Agree the price is too high. Suggest you consider this source, Southwest wheel & Bearing Trailer Parts.com

Good luck!

There should be a number on the rubber outer lip of the seal ... you may need a magnifying glass ... jot it down and go to any trailer supply house. Should be under $10. You don't need to go to the manufacturer for these.

When I did our bearings last year, I e-mailed Dexter for the correct part number. The engineer who answered gave me their part number as well as 2 cross reference part numbers from other manufacturers. I ordered one of the cross reference part numbers from local auto parts store I deal with. List for the seals was something in the $30 each range, I think I paid $16 or $17 each. Still seems like a lot for a grease seal, but that's what's keeping the grease off the brake linings.

Take the p/n from the seal and do a search on Amazon. I had bought mine at NAPA and later found them on Amazon for about 1/10 the price I paid.

Just a follow up post on my previous one ... I bought wheel seals this past May from a local trailer supply house for $3.41 each.

Thanks for all your information and advice - I think the seals I was looking at on the Dexter site were the outside seals (More expensive) not the inside seals - I went to my friendly local trailer, wheels and bearings place and got them for $5:00.
Another pre trip chore completed!!!
