Honda Generator Question
I have a Honda that runs, somewhat rough, however it dies if I take the choke off. Any thoughts on what is going on ?

Sounds like the carburetor is gumed up. If it’s the 3000 watt it’s a pretty easy DIY. Open up the side hinge take the air cleaner off 2 bolts. Take the gas line off remove the carburetor. Take the carburetor apart and clean it with carburetor cleaner. There probably is a couple lines and a spring to remove. There is no adjustment to the carburetor. Really not much to it.
Always use gas treatment and be sure to run the carburetor out of gas when you put it up.
Check the air cleaner first. If it’s dirty replace and try again.

If you have the 2000i model, here are a couple of alternatives to correct your problem. These may also apply to the 3000i model too.
- Remove and clean the carb. Here is a file I saved from RV.net long ago on the process. It is very complete and comes with pictures. Honda 2000 Carburetor Rebuild Instructions.pdf
- Buy a replacement carb off of Amazon and other sources for $25 to $35. A quick and easy way to cure the problem. Here is a sample link. https://www.amazon.com/Honda-Power-E...40065403&psc=1

Honda like Carl said about the 2000 does have replacement carburetors for the 3000 but you will need to know the serial number because there are about 10 different carburetors for that generator. You may not be able to rebuild yours if gas has been allowed to set in it for long periods of time without gas treatment.

Adjust the carb.
Turn the screw clockwise until the engine starts to sound rough.
- Tightening the screw weakens the air and fuel mixture and decreases the amount of fuel flowing to the engine.
- Tightening the screw is also called making the fuel mixture leaner, which lowers the RPMs at which the engine idles.

You don't mention where you are located at - if above 5000 feet (New Mexico, Colorado, Utah for example), your generator may need to have different needle set installed for the high altitude. When you go back to lower, the originals will need to be reinstalled.

I think the diagnosis and possible repairs have been covered well.
In the future, always turn the gas supply off and let the engine run till out of gas.
I like to put in some SeaFoam treatments occasionally to keep things clean inside.

Single most important tip... TRY to keep ethanol gas out of the tank. Some areas of the country that is not possible.
Also important (as Jay said) turn off the fuel supply and let the engine quit (using all gas in the carburetor) if is is going to sit for even a couple of days.
If you plan on storing it for any length of time, get the gas out of the tank unless it is non oxygenated (no ethanol) gas. That stuff goes bad sooner than you think.
Thankfully in ND I can still buy 100% gas, even 87 octane which is better for small engines but it is about 30 cents a gallon more that the ethanol blend gas. Money well spent when its going in any small engine I own.

You don’t , unless you add a shutoff valve , which I did , ends all the issues with gas on the Honda 2000, they have a very touchy carb unless you run them out of gas . There’s a good YouTube video on adding a shutoff valve. Very simple .

Great suggestions all.
I installed a kit on both my 2000’s that allows you to turn a switch and it runs the gas out in about 2:30 minutes. I always run ethanol free gas, local Bucee’s carries this grade. I also run Seafoam or another treatment to the gas to keep the carb clean.I finally got the one started but still only runs with choke wide open. The other one runs just fine and it has been treated the same way. Go figure. Thanks for all the suggestions

Any of these generators without a separate switch to let the carburetor run out of gas when it’s cut off one can be easily added. Go to the cut off switch and find the wire to it and add a small toggle switch in the line. When the toggle switch is on the generator will stop as designed when it’s off it will empty the carburetor before it stops.

You need to pull the carburetor , screw the little jet out ,and get some tip cleaners that is used for cleaning a cutting torch tip . Find the right size in the tip cleaner ,and file all those small holes in the jet, there's several . Some have to clogged not letting enough gas thru ,that's why the choke is needed . Takes about 30 minutes to do it ,it's very simple . If unsure there are YouTube videos showing how .
I'm surprised with the shutoff valves you are having an issue , mine was always running rough if just sitting for a month , until I added the shutoff. I run plain old regular gas without a problem now .
