LPG 30# tanks (Found 50#)

Hey All,

Did anyone here that has the generator that run on LPG. Can I install larger LPG Tanks? Looks like I have room for two 40# tanks, but would like to install a 100# tank from a motor home. Will have to move some things around but has anyone tried this and is it legal to do? Thanks for any help on this. We ran the generator today for 30 minutes and we used almost 3/8's to 1/4 of the 30# tank. We like to boon dock along the pacific coast (Gold Coast area) At this rate we will be buying lpg fuel every 4 to 5 days

We use 40# tanks in our rig no problem. Don’t know where a 100# tank would fit. I like how some of the manufacturers install 100 pounders between the frame. Those frames are considerably more engineered than the one’s Keystone specs from Lippert.

I just carry two 30# tanks that are not hooked up in addition to the two I’m running off of. That way I always have two tanks full and I can run out after we unhook and find cheap propane.

From the research that I did the forties will work. Just remember that even with forties it will suck down the propane. I finally decided to get a little 2000 watt gas generator that I use when I don’t need all the power that my 5500 is capable of. Watching TV with the Satellite Out boon-docking is a good example.
Good luck and let use know how it works out.
Happy roads to you.

I put two 40's in our 2955RL, just moved the belly bands up a few inches to be closer to the center of the 40's.

A 30# tank should run the Onan 7-8 hours. I put in 40# tanks to extend run time.

to me it would become a pain to refill these larger tanks. i guess it'll work for the 'younger' rvers.

At 90 pounds the difference in weight would be a factor for me.

That's for younger men than I, especially with a bad back.

I thought I read somewhere that 80# was the legal max to haul around in tanks without appropriate licensing. By tanks, I mean loose tanks.

I read somewhere that 60# is the most you can legally carry if that matters. Keep in mind that you have to lift those bigger tanks and set them in place when they are full. I don't know about you but a full 30# tank is about as much as my old wife can lift and set into place.

That's a pretty hefty tank 90 lbs full. Watch your back. You're still going to suck down the LPG just as fast, so the fuel cost will be the same, each bill will be larger though. Have you considered solar? Could be longer term option for you.
