Red propane regulator
We have a 2007 Montana and were getting a hissing noise coming from either the red propane regulator or the pigtail on the passenger side, took it to a RV repair shop, and they recertified the propane system, they changed the pigtail and removed the red regulator all together, I questioned why it was put in by the OEM, he said that it was not required, the little I can find out about it suggests it is a high pressure regulator, does anyone know what the function of the passenger side red regulator is and whether I should have one installed.

This was covered once in the past that I am aware of. My old memory says that it is because the large black iron gas pipe that connects both sides together could allow for propane gas to liquidfy in some cases, so it is used as a preventer for this reason only. Why keystone did not use a high quality propane hose to crossover instead is a mystery...cost? John

He told you wrong. Here is a previous discussion about it.
I would take it back to him and explain the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association regarding recreational vehicles so that he does not do that to any one else. He is leaving himself, and his company, open to major liability issues if something catastrophic ever happened, unless the NFPA requirement is not used in Canada.

Thanks, I have read your previous post, I had the recertification done about a week ago, and it has been bugging me ever since, the thought that the OEM would install a regulator that was not needed was just not believable, but he was adamant that it was not required. Regardless of Canadas requirements, I feel your previous post makes perfect sense, and will get one reinstalled, trouble is I havent got the old one, but if I understand your post properly, I would replace it with a red high pressure regulator with 30 psi or less on the curb side

The red regulator has a check valve in case a Line rupture it is supposed to stop flow, your tank should also have that feature

30 psi is correct. If you google RV hi pressure propane regulator you should find multiple sources.

In spite of the fire code requirements for them, those red regulators are problematic at best. Many folks have reported having leaks or blockages with them, and we had the issue of not being able to draw from that side's tank after filling the street side one. I'm not positive when tank valves were required to have check valves built in to prevent open leakage, but it's been a while. With newer valves on your tanks, I don't understand the need for the red one that is there to prevent the same thing if the pipe ruptured.

If you decide to put one back on it's not a big deal. Just use pipe tape made for gas.

I know a lot of you have had trouble with the red high pressure regulator, and some have had it removed from your propane system all together, but I feel there is a question that I would like the answer to before I take the same action. If it is a NFPA requirement, with most or all coaches that have a propane bottle on both sides of their rig, that is 60 inches from the outlet, what is the reasoning for that requirement, and one would assume the only reason Montana has included it in their rigs is to meet that requirement. The other statement the tech who did the recertification said that the regulator vent was installed with the vent pointing up, which it should be pointing down, and the next point he made caught my attention, that the propane systems are not certified by the manufacturer, but rather by the dealer, hope thats not the case.
