Why Short Weekend RV Trips No Longer Appeal After Years of Long-Term Hosting

I retired 5 years ago and over the last 5 years had opportunity to camp host at 2 different locations. One in North Carolina and the other in Louisiana.

It seems each "stay" has gotten longer and longer. We are leaving this Saturday from Louisiana after being at the site for 5 months. We're returning again in April-May-June. In August we'll be camp hosts in North Carolina, returning to Louisiana for another Oct 2026 through Feb 2027 (5 months).

Our "camping" adventures have settled down to these 3 locations, NC, Louisiana, and Home (Indiana). And our shortest length of stay is a full month.

Thinking about our return trip to Indiana on Feb 28, we are doing an overnight near Memphis, Tennessee and home Sunday night. Then back to Louisiana March 28.

Talking to my wife, we both agree, after long time camping, we just can't hardly imagine doing a week-end "gaunt" ... arrive Friday night - leave Sunday morning. We use to do that all the time. Now, it seems hardly worth the effort for such a short time.

I guess I need to acquire more camp host gigs that require long term commitments. Fortunately, the park in Louisiana want's me to stay year round and never leave. It's very tempting to take them up on their offer. But, Indiana is my home and I do have obligations there, so I do have to return "home" sometimes.

It's hard to imagine, how over the last 35 years my wife and I have been "camping" starting from a "tent" overnight and thinking that was beyond remarkable ... to spending so much time away from "home" now living in a 40 foot long box!

Week-end trip? ... way to short now ... way to short!

I agree about weekend camping. Hardly worth all the packing- unpacking etc for 2 days. Also on a different note - all the people that bought rigs during covid and spent $150,000 for truck and Montana. Hard to get money's worth at weekends and one 2 week trip like many do. I couldn't afford that.

The nicest camp host I have seen is in Bath County Va. it’s at the Bath Co pump store site. Dominion Power keeps the the grass looking better than most lawns and there is at less 50 acres probably more. There are 2 lakes the larger one is about 1000 yards long and 300 wide. Dominion Power takes care of everything including trash pickup. There are only about 60 camps. They go for $10 and the host gets to keep it all. Not a bad deal to say in one of the prettiest in Virginia. Hot Springs with its 4 or 5 star resort is close by with a premier golf course. Home range of Sammy Sneed.
