I am considering buying a portable water softner for our 3400 RL and have a question. I have looked at the "On the Go" water softner and all their information on their web site. For any of you that use a water softner, what do you do with the backwash water when re-generating the unit? On their web site it looks like they just discharge the water on the ground but I do not think this is legal and most campgrounds would have aproblem with this.

That is what we do and so far no one has had a problem with it.

I got one of those clear plastic sewer hose elbows with a hose attachment. Discharge the water softener into the sewer. Got the elbow from Camping World.

Because the salt will do damage to plants and lawn CountryGuy has come up with a bit of plumbing that keeps the discharge water from going on the lawn.

Municipalities are discouraging salt based softeners as they empty so much salt into the sewer systems. I'm not sure if they can't remove it or is costly to remove. I try to direct mine towards an area that looks like the park would appreciate the weed control.

That's actually what I should have said also. We try to always park on gravel. If I was forced to be on a concrete pad or grass and needed to back flush I'd put it down the sewer. The water softener isn't a have to have everyday thing for us anyway. When we are on the move it doesn't come out and if I needed to wait to back flush that wouldn't be an issue either. The fact that we use it 90% of the time is enough to get the benefits we need.

No water goes into our rig un-softened. If we are on gravel or have weeds near by I will dump there but usually it goes into the sewer.
