Testing the heater..pointers?

What steps would you do to test the furnace on an ' Monte? No clue if/when its been used

Turn the thermostat fan to "AUTO" set it to "Furnace" mode (YouTube videos for operation of different model thermostats), set the heat as high as it will go and let it run.

Make sure you check both the gas and electric heat if it has a heat pump

Remove the outer cover and check for cleanliness. The screens aren't small enough mesh to prevent insects from entering and building nests. Use a soft bottle brush and shop vac and clean out the exhaust tube as well as an overall cleaning, there are a number of you tube videos on this subject. On the inside, a lot of units install a return in the stair risers, make sure they are vacuumed out and no blockage. Check the floor registers make sure they're cleaned/vacuumed out. They will collect a lot of debris just because of their location.

Another worthy check is the gas pressure. It's not really a DIY job unless you're skilled in doing it and have a manometer. The recommended pressure on all units I've seen is between 10-13 in/WC.

Recently, our furnace would try to fire but wouldn't stay lit. My husband ran down every area that could possibly be wrong. A friend, that is also a NRVTA technician, came out to give us a hand. He had more diagnostic equipment than we had. Come to find out, we had a bad regulator. It still operated the refrigerator and stove but needed more pressure for the furnace. Also, the flame electrode needed replaced. I would highly recommend finding a NRVTA technician. He allowed us to buy our own parts and install them ourselves. It saved us a lot of money.
