2024 Montana Legacy 3123 RL with built-in surge protector that is tripping with the generator. Shore power works just fine. Generator used is a 4700 Onan portable generator.

A bonded plug should solve your problem. They can be bought or easily made. Get a 120 volt plug and connect the neutral terminal with the ground terminal. Just be sure you don’t connect the hot terminal with either the ground or the neutral terminal. Should cost a couple bucks and 10 minutes.

What surge protector do you have. The Progressive Industries Smart surge protector says it will continue to operate normally with an open ground, open neutral, or reverse polarity while indicating the issue via the LEDs.

I have the older progressive industries wired in , and all I have to do is switch it off at the display or I can use the bonding plug . Being an older one its the dumb one ,not smart . :D

Hi Jeff. I know this is an old post but we have the exact same Montana with the exact same surge protector installed. This weekend we dry camped and used a generator for the first time on it. The surge protector tripped everytime. Just wondering if the bonding plug many suggested fixed your issue on tripping the surge protector. If not, did you figure it out?

Yes the bonding plug solved the problem. Wish dealer or Keystone would have let us know. Drove 2 1/2 hours to buy a new generator because we thought maybe my 2500w generator wasn’t putting out enough amps for the system. Oh well, I ended up with a very nice Onan 4500 generator.

I was a bit stumped , I was in the mountains so to speak on a hunt ,first time with the Honda 2000 , and the surge protecter . No cell service , so I drove to where I got service from my camp , and called a friend to see if he knew the problem ,he did . Drove back to camp ,and shut off the surge protecter all was good .

Mine must be "older" too (6 years now) as it won't turn the camper on if not grounded, reversed polarity either. Actually, I like that better than just a read out. If the shore power connection is wired incorrect, I'm glad the Progressive safeguards the camper. Getting "old" does have it's advantages! :oldman:
