Starlink Internet Service

Does anyone use Starlink for their home internet service? Perhaps some of our Canadian friends? I would be interested in how it is working for you. I am on their list for service; should be available in my area "mid to late 2021".

At this point they do not allow the device to be mobile, but I am hoping that will become available in the future. Perhaps once all the satellites are launched. If it works, this would be great to take along in the RV.

Scott, they are trying to get it to help underserved remote areas first (meaning those with poor internet accessibility). Some of our folks on the mountain have it and they all say it has worked great. It is still in Beta. We will probably sign up when it’s available for the RV.

I pulled the trigger on a Starlink RV system. Purchased it Thursday, arriving tomorrow.
Now I just need to figure out how to mount it on the roof of the RV when we are at a location. We just are tired of NO WIFI at the campgrounds. Our last stay in KY there was NO cell service and the WIFI (when I could connect to it) was .2MBPS. My gosh, dial-up is faster.
The wife said enough is enough. Fix it!
So no more NOFI for us! I hope cell over WIFI calling works with Starlink, Then we are all set!
This has been the plan eventually when I finally retire and we go full time, so its just a little early coming. The nice thing is Starlink RV ships right away. I was on a home waitlist and they were estimating another year before they would ship. And I can pause the service RV service any time. for $135 a month its not too bad. Ill let you all know how it performs, were out again in July.

Todd, you may not want to permanently mount it on your roof. There are times where we are in a site that has dense tree cover and that would hinder or completely stop your internet service. Being able to move the dish to a clear spot would be very beneficial.

We have had our Starlink for RV system for about one week. We mounted the dish on a pole from flag pole buddy. flagpolebuddy.com They even have a Starlink adaptor. So far the performance is way better then campground wifi. It does slow down some in the evening hours and will occasionally buffer YouTube TV for a few seconds. But it isn't bad. We feel like it was a great upgrade. And as more satellites gets launched it will get better. I just ran a speed test and it is 69.3 download and 4.6 upload. Sometimes it is over 100 download. Hope this helps.

Not only that but that antenna would be as aerodynamic as a sail going down the road and likely would put you over the maximum height.

We love our Starlink but would never consider roof mounting it.

I just camped at a park south of Lander,Wy. They had just got Starlink going a few days before I showed up. It worked great. The park only has 20 sites and about 12-15 rigs in it at the time.

That's good to hear. I haven't explored all the differences between a commercial subscription and a personal one. I do know it costs more and it will get prioritized over a personal account but that is about all.

For those that feel they can afford Starlink I highly recommend it. We generally run 2 TVs, 2 laptops, 2 phones, 3 smart switches and 3 or 4 other miscellaneous devices and everything runs with good speed.

Have seen several rvs with starlink here in Santa fe skies. One had it sitting on the roof of a class a, but the trailers that had it were sitting on the ground.

The Starlink arrived a day late from FEDEX which is usual with them, I started it up Thursday evening in the front yard. It performed well with 107 MBPS speed. Latency was somewhat high at 135ms, so all is well so far. I have purchased the 150' cable and pipe adaptor, the plan is to deploy the 75' cable to the roof in the same chase as the solar wiring and mount Dishy MC flatface on a homemade bracket on the solar panel struts bolted to the roof when stationary or on the ground with the 150' cable if needed for clear sky view. Obviously it will come in when moving as the RV version will not support mobile operation. The first real trial will be the last week of July.

As my wife still works from home teaching university courses and will need an internet connection during our 5 month trip starting the end of July we are wondering how Starlink RV works around cities, particularly in South Dakota, Ohio, Missouri, Mississippi and Texas areas. And after joining are you provided and listings of service areas.

You're right, they aren't. About half is up. Approximately 60 satellites go up each launch. SpaceX wants about another 2000 to complete the system. So about another 30+ launches are in order. $70M per launch.

4,400 is the number of satellites planned for generation 1... the ultimate goal is about 42,000 satellites, so they are not even at 10% capacity yet (2500 launched as of last month).

I know of a number of people using the service; mixed results so far. Those in the northern US and Canada overall report very good results (100mb+ dl, and latency <30-40ms). Those in the southern US that I know have had widely variable results and more outages.

Starlink is now set to begin launching their Gen2 satellites, which are far more capable; however they weigh about 5x as much which requires a much heavier launcher. Starlink has had some delays due to environmental concerns at launch sites from the use of the heavier launcher.

Given the number of satellites in orbit compared to the total planned amount, and the increased capabilities of the Gen2 satellites (and of course what will follow in gen3, etc) one can assume the service will continue to improve over time. Starlink is so far ahead of other competitors, including Amazon, who are trying to get into this space - pun intended

Just received my Starlink dish package and it works awesome at my home in New Hampshire. I ordered the RV package so I could turn it off during the winter. Took me far longer to route the cable into my camper than to initialize and get service. Currently getting over 150 Mbps download speeds. Going to test it camping for the 4th up at Association Island on Lake Ontario. You do need a fairly clear view of the northeast sky up here but so far pretty much satisfied that I should be able to work remotely.
