We haven't taken a looong trip since 2019. I retired from Disney in January and we've spent probably 75% of our time camping & traveling, but we've had too many schedule conflicts to take any long trips. One of our neighbor couples are camping buddies of ours and she finally retired from Disney last month.
We're hitting the road on Monday and we're planning to be gone at least four weeks. We live just outside L.A. and I really don't want to be home in July or August anyway, so hopefully we'll stay gone longer.
We've never taken long trips in the summer though. We're used to just winging it, but we can't improvise in the summertime without reservations, so we've booked out the first three weeks of the trip (which I'm not crazy about).
We're going to head up through Utah and Idaho to get to Yellowstone week after next. We'll spend a week there and then take another week to get down to Colorado and meet up with one of our kids & family in Durango. They just have a little popup on top of their pickup, but their young daughter isn't safe up there anymore, so they're shopping for a new trailer this weekend.
It will be interesting to see how this goes. Between the rigid schedule with reservations and traveling with another couple, this will be an adjustment for us. We're pretty flexible though.
I'm hoping to make a quirky stop on Tuesday. They say to never meet your heroes, but I'm a meat-smoking enthusiast and I've made arrangements to stop and meet with some of my penpals: celebrity cook Susie Bulloch and her husband Todd of "Hey Grill, Hey" fame in southern Utah. I won a meat rub competition with them a few years ago and I'm eager to meet with them.
Stay tuned for trip pics.
