OK, I know there has been many discussions on this subject, but I am not good at searches. When I search I get threads from 2005 and such so I apologize if I repeat.
I am downsizing from a king to queen mattress. I will replace rather then trim the plywood base so I can extend the length a bit to reduce mattress overhang at the bottom. My question is for those who have done this what width did you use on the base platform? I'm thinking 58" to give just a bit of overhang on the sides. What have others done. I will stop at 78" on the length to allow slides to close.

I simply cut mine down, but did about 58 on the width as well. I didn't want to rub up against the plywood edging walking by the bed yet wanted it close enough to the edge to help hold sheets in place while giving support to the mattress. We are thrilled with the king to queen change!

We just cut ours down on both of our rigs. 58" sounds about right. Nothing like a large bedroom.

Thanks for all the confirmations and tips. I was planning to rout a small radius along the edge and sand it smooth, but now I'm thinking the molding idea wins out. Definitely don't want to scrape along plywood getting into bed.

I'll be replacing the original 7/16" plywood with 3/4" so it should be strong enough. I happen to have a sheet measuring 60"X55" from an old homemade ping pong table. I will need to cut it 58"X53". The original was 67"wide X 48" long. (overall length will be 79") The 5" of added length will leave me with 1" mattress overhang all around and still able to close all slides w/o interference. Just lucky to have that oversized piece of plywood.
