I ran a search and nothing matching my question came up. We are wanting to get a second EMS to leave at the house when we are plugged in before and after trips. We currently have a Progressive PT50X EMS that has been solid for over 5 years. I have been looking at the new Hughes Power Watchdog Gen II with the wifi/bluetooth. I have heard some negative things about the Watchdog causing electrical problems/hazards. If we get the Watchdog, we would take that with us and leave the Progressive at the house.
I would like to get some comments/reviews on those that have used the new Power Watchdog-how has it worked, how long have you had it, have you had any problems, how is customer service when you need replace the internal module when it self sacrafices??
Thanks everyone.

I just purchased this exact EMS, have had it for two months, no issues, app was easy to setup. We leave our RV parked on a snowbird site during the winter (Nov - May) and this thing allows me to monitor the RVs power consumption, amps and watts on both legs L1 & L2, gives me the ability to turn off the power from the app when we are not at the site and with a life time warranty I thought it was a good deal, caught it on sale a Camping World the same weekend my old EMS drop a leg. Based on my limited use I would recommend it.

I have had the gen 1 (Bluetooth but no WiFi) Hughes Power Watch Dog (paired with a Hughes Autoformer) for several years; no problems at all. No comment on the internal module; never had to replace, but I do carry a spare which was easy to get.

The 10 yr old Progressive 30 amp EMS that came with our motorhome died last week and I bought a 30 amp watchdog to replace it. The new watchdog is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled…very nice. I have a 50 amp watchdog for the Montana and it’s 3 or 4 yrs old, Bluetooth only. Very nice!!!

I bought the new watchdog at United RV in Fort Worth. My motorhome is a 30 amp coach. They had two options for the pedestal plug type - a self resetting unit ($375 I think) and a non-self resetting unit ($169). I asked the salesman about the difference in the two…he said you will need to walk out to the pedestal and flip the breaker off then back on for the non-self resetting unit. The other one will reset itself. I told him I did not mind walking out to flip the switch for $200, so I bought the cheaper unit. I like the new design better than my older one.

Edit: i deleted the old watchdog app on my iphone and installed the newer Watchdog wifi app. Works great with both bluetooth or wifi.

I had the Gen I for 3-4 years before upgrading to the Gen II for the better weather protection on the RV power cord connection when it first came out. No issues with either one. Bought the replacement surge module for both, just in case, but haven't used them. Sold the Gen I.

Going hard wired is optimal for weather protection, but may make it difficult to replace the surge module if it gets "used". Get a cable lock if security is a concern.

I have the Gen2 with wifi/bluetooth and the only issue so far is the wifi connection, it will stop working and a power reset is required to restore the connectivity. I use bluetooth 99% of the time so it isn't an issue for me. I agree with the cable lock comment.

I mounted mine internally.

When my Progressive died last summer I installed the hard wired Watchdog with BT/WIFI. Love it. App is sweet. I have used it at Yosemite and another place to show the staff their power was wrong. Works so good. I also bought the replacement surge unit for in case it is needed.

In the year 2018 we had a 30 amp Outback travel trailer. I used a smaller style Progressive on it, and it it simply came up missing one day. Because of our location at the time, I ended up purchasing a new Hughes 30 amp (portable) and I really like it, especially the Bluetooth ability to pair with my phone. Just a few weeks later, Hughes did an upgrade to their program and I was NEVER able to pair with my phone again. I kind of missed that feature, but the unit worked perfectly fine.

Well, JUST a short while after that, we traded campers and ended up getting our Montana that's on a 50 amp service. I ended up purchasing the 50X Progressive (2019) and it has been plugged in 24x7x365 ever since, at home and camping.

I kept the 30 amp Hughes and have had occasion to use it. Actually, it's currently running the camper right now as I type. Sometimes we do land on campsites that have only 30 amp hook-up, so with the adapter I can still plug my 50 amp camper in. Maybe that's not necessary, but I just feel better if on a 30 amp outlet to use the 30 amp protector.

Both units have worked marvelously all these years. I still cannot get the Bluetooth to work with my phone for the Hughes, but the unit does have the lights on the front of it to give me the errors when something happens.

I quit agonizing over use of electricity, how much amperage is doing what and so forth some time ago. The read-outs are a nice feature for sure, but the reality is, I don't need them. I don't care. If the power goes wonky, an error code happens, the unit shuts the camper down, and that's all that really matters. Also, I check the error codes when first plugging in.

Currently, I'm at a State Historic Site in Louisiana and I am the only camper here as this is not a traditional campground. They have a full hook-up site for their "camp host" position. I've been here (back and forth and return again for several months in a row) and have never had issues with the power, until about a week ago. My 50 amp progressive shut the camper down, and I am glad for the read-outs. Turns out, that electrical socket is spiking to 140 - 141 volts and then down to 125 - 126. I plugged into the 30 amp side and using the Hughes right now until someone can get here and figure out why the spikes and high voltage is occurring.

Bottom line, I have found a use for both units and I use both units depending on the environment. Both units have worked well since 2018, flawless, with no issues and both have done exactly what I wanted .... shut down the trailer when dirty power hits and display what the issue is that caused the shut down.

I an only imagine the newer version of the Hughes is even better. I don't need the Bluetooth technology to keep me constantly worried and upset every time there is a little flux in the power. As long as the protectors keep the power inside their specified "tolerance" levels, that's good enough for me. I enjoy camping, not being tied to technology.

I have the Watchdog for 5 years. I had mine hardwired into the Monty on the basement's roof between the trusses so it was out of the way and yet I could assess codes. I really like it, and it has saved the RV on a couple of occasions. I really like it!

Since they both do the same thing I know which I would buy, the cheapest one or should I say the least expensive. When I bought mine the Hughes was the least expensive.

I have both! The Progressive is used to check the pedestal's power as I am traveling and at the pedestal. The Watchdog is hardwired. Using two, most times, is redundant. I have had no problems using both, but each has served their purpose and saved me grief! I figured the price is a cheap insurance policy to avoid an electric issue that impacts the wiring harnesses.

I learned something today about the new Wi-Fi/bluetooth Watchdogs from customer service.

The “new” app is called POWER WATCHDOG WI-FI. It has a blue colored dog as the icon, and will connect with the watchdog using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

The “old” app is called POWER WATCHDOG BLUETOOTH ONLY. It has a red colored dog icon. I think the app was simply called POWER WATCHDOG when I bought my original plug in 2022.

My “old” 50 amp Bluetooth watchdog will not work with the new app. I thought Bluetooth was Bluetooth and figured the new app would pick up the old watchdog using Bluetooth signal…one app to monitor both plugs - right?

That is NOT the case for these guys. The new app ONLY works for new WI-FI/BLUETOOTH watchdogs…the new app will not connect or find my old watchdog…and I suppose vice-versa. The new app does not have a way to manually enter unit serial numbers etc…you only have the option to scan a QR Code or let it find and connect to the signal and register itself.

That seems like a weird/stupid engineering decision to me…why not have the new app do both? You will need to keep the old red app…now you guys know.

Thank-you for confirming that bit of information! For the last 6 years I thought I was loosing my mind and even more "technology challenged" than ever. I'm glad to read it's NOT me! Thank-you!

We have the hardwired Progressive 50a EMS. It works great and has saved our bacon a couple times. Just saving your electrical components from damage one time makes it a worthwhile investment.

I suspect either brand will do the job.
