How much weight will the rear hitch handle?

Hello All!!

I am about to purchase an e-bike for my wife and am wondering what the weight capacity is for the rear hitch. I have a Kuat Transfer v2 bike rack that holds 2 bikes. My mountain bike is pretty light weight, but the e-bikes can be up to 80 lbs. are there any specs regarding weight capacity for the rear hitch?
I have a 2018 3120RL Montana.

Thank you!
Michael

I have a 3781 2025, the hitch on back says 300lb tongue weight and 3000lb towing. this was installed at factory.

Just be careful!! Anything all the way in the back will get bounced around A LOT. Make sure you are expecting a lot of rattle and roll. Use several tie-down straps. Don't assume the Kuat will hold everything in.

My 4.7 cents

Personally I would only use bike rack that is certified to go on the back of a trailer. We have a Hollywood rack on our 21 Montana. I have had a stress crack on the frame and Hollywood replaced the defective parts. As mentioned there is a lot of stress as you are going down the road. We have 2 rad bikes and they are heavy.

Mine is rated for 500 lbs , and 5,000 tow . I tow a 10’ utility trailer for my inflatable pontoon boat. Can’t imagine a 300, 3000 not handling a couple bikes , and rack strapped down securely , and definitely put a hitch tightener to take the bounce between the receiver , and bike rack . That’s usually half the issue letting that bike rack bounce in the sloppy receiver.

Can the hitch be modified to have 2" receiver? Would that increase the capacity if the crossmember is removed and a 2" receiver welded unto the frame?

I wouldn’t be welding it , mines bolted with three 1/2 bolts per side . You may want to weld some gussets to the web of the frame , but it’s not a great idea to weld a hitch to the frame , unless you do both , weld , and bolts . But IMO done right a hitch bolted to the frame is good enough

Our 2019 - 3121 hitch is 300lbs tongue weight, I use the Hollywood rack to haul our 2 E-bikes. They are about 75lbs each. Haven't had any issues hauling them. Just get a rack rated for the back of an RV, there are a few choices out there. The Hollywood rack has served us well, over 10k miles with that rack.

Ok this is what was thinking, I would keep it bolted with grade 8 bolts, then I was thinking of removing the crossmember (unbolt it) and removing the 1.5" receiver (grinding off) and welding a 2" receiver to it with gussets, then reattaching the crossmember tube with the 2" receiver to the frame.

Now you’re talking , that’s exactly how mine is done , and grade 8 bolts . And don’t forget to get one of those hitch tighteners that take the play out of the receiver , so whatever you are hooking to the receiver , bike rack , trailer whatever there is no play between the two of them . Especially on the rear of your fifth wheel, there’s enough bounce as it is .Also I sent you a private message.

If you just want to go from 1.5" to 2" receiver, there are adapters to get you there. May be cheaper and easier than grinding and welding.

I think if I read him right , he's doing more than just using wanting to go to a 2' receiver . . Besides that all that adapter will do is extend that hitch further out ,and give it more leverage to either fail or bounce around . I think he' s headed in the right direction , get rid of the 1.5 receiver , weld in a 2" more stability , and beef it up with gussets like he has purposed .

We have a 2022 3231CK Montana Legacy with a factory installed 2” receiver rated for 300 lbs tongue weight. We’ve put over 10,000 miles on it with 2 RAD Ebikes with a Hollywood rack on it with no issues at all. As someone previously mentioned I have the accessory that tightens up the rack to the receiver to eliminate slop. Works great. Before I get comments on the license plate, I raised is up the ladder a bit and added a light😁

Ours is rated for 300lbs, I was told if it was towing rated it would have the trailer wiring installed, but I may be wrong. As much as my rig bounces around I would never think of using that hitch for anything. Although I do have a pole mount I use when we are stationary for erecting Ham radio antennas.
