An RVer with a stock 2020 Ram 3500 dually under 100,000 miles asked for extended warranty company recommendations and good or bad experiences as the truck ages. The member wanted protection against expensive repairs they could not perform themselves, such as turbocharger or head gasket work, but said their research increasingly suggested high premiums for limited savings.

Responding members generally questioned the value of coverage, citing warranty company profits, DIY repairs and...

Does anyone have advice on Extended Warranty policies / companies? Good or bad experiences? My stock 2020 3500 RAM dually is still under 100,000 miles but I am considering purchasing a plan as things get a little older on my vehicle. Any input is appreciated.

Haven’t checked lately but I used to find the cost of extended warranties after 100K not worth it for us though sometimes we get road hazard coverage for our tires. (If we buy new, we have bought ext warranties based on our opinion of fair value. For example, the 100K plan for our truck that included was $750 but . . . we never had to use it.)

I’m a DIYer and forums like this, YouTube, combined with shop experience has been sufficient to get us thru most things. I realize the “big” stuff like engine and trans could be a huge cost but the think the chance of them failing is pretty low and keep on top on maintenance at severe service intervals. When the truck gets up there in miles, I might replace things like starter and alternators before they go out to avoid getting stuck on the road.

Extended warranty is a great money maker for the warranty company. If they can make money off of them so can I by not having them.

Well everyone needs to make money - I dont begrudge them of that - UNLESS they are all hype and don't live up to their word. So, I am trying to research which company has a good reputation among MOC members like myself, who may not have the skillset to replace their own turbocharger or head gaskets. I am willing to spend a little to save alot, but so far my research is proving that I will spend a lot to save a little - like you said - good for the warranty company.

Sounds a lot like dental insurance…it pays for the things I can afford, but doesn’t help much with the things I can’t afford!

Had Good Sam extended for the RV and my 2015 one ton Duramax. Still have both and they still cover both units for anything welded to the frame. Have had the Norcold cooling unit replaced, only a 200 dollar copay, same for front end and onstar module.

I’ve bought manufacturers insurance over the internet. For my F350, it was about 2,000, and it worked out about even. For my RAM 3500, I bought from Granger, but so far haven’t needed work, but I’m still under the 3/36.

Being a tech at a Chevrolet dealership I can say I’ve almost never seen an extended warranty NOT pay for its self. Usually the first time it’s used. I got one on my 23 Silverado when bought new and also on both fifth wheels when bought new. Both on the trailers paid for themselves. I don’t know about dodge/ram but I would assume you could still get one from your local dealer although it would have been best bought new with the truck or even used cars bought at dealers can be sold with them.
