Cell Phone Coverage and Cost for RV Travel

Looking to get a cell \phone Reaching out for input on what people recommend for cost and coverage for cell phone

We currently have TMobile and have been happy with it at the S&B and traveling. It looked cheap when we got it 3 years ago before I retired, now $142/month for two phones does not seem cheap.

We live out in the country and signals from the big 3 are all weak. We went with ATT years ago...dumped them for Verizon (my company phone was Verizon)...dumped them when I retired for TMobile. We have Starlink internet for the S&B and for travel, so mobile signal out here is really not a concern anymore since the phones go over the internet signal.

We are Dish customers, and Dish has Boost Mobile for something like $25 per phone unlimited. I have been intending to research the forums and see what RVers say about Boost...$50/month is tempting.

We have puretalk. 2 phones for right at $40 a month. I think we get a discount for being old!! LOL
I think we have a GB limit but we have never hit it unless I turn on a hotspot.

We’ve had ATT unlimited seems like “forever” and no complaints as it works for us most places. As mikendebbie mentions, if you want or need coverage in remote places, you may want to add on Starlink RV. We have it. One nice thing about SL RV is that you can opt in/out of monthly regular service and if you opt out, it’s $10/mo to have low speed bandwidth for text/emergencies if you’re traveling in a place with weak/no cell coverage.

If you google for something like, “best senior phone plans” there are articles from CNET, AARP, etc and ai assisted responses that can be helpful to get a range of prices and plans.

At some point you’ll prob want to decide if you just want basic cell service or a plus/premium plan so you can stream video to your phone or smart TV. (Assuming it’s a smart phone). Those articles above may help with this too.

Dish (EchoStar) just sold their cellular spectrum to AT&T earlier this week and had previously sold another block of spectrum to Starlink. It will be interesting to see what happens to Boost Mobile. We never looked into it, but we do have Dish at home and on the road.

AT&T our primary phones (2 of them), unlimited data.
Wife's work phone, Verizon.
Visible phone for wifi hot spot, continuously in use, 24x7x365 and use it at home even when not camping. It's dedicated for internet only. $45 a month as we are fixed on this amount, but Visible offers cheaper rates too. Truly unlimited internet, but we don't use this phone for actual calls or text, only for wifi internet.

This is timely!! I just spent the last 3 months or so looking into this a just a couple weeks ago made the switch away from AT&T after many many years of their service. My main criteria were: reliability, cost, service while traveling, and data speed and unlimited. After all my research, talking to phone companies we went with US Mobile. To start with my bill dropped from about $175 / month down to $67/ month ( paid annually to save some $$$). 2 phones with 2 lines each ( all get to that) and 1 phone phone w 2 GB for our elderly mom and 2 Apple Watches. That takes care of cost, unlimited phone, text, data (no speed caps), unlimited hot spot. There us the provision to drop data 1 notch if cell you are in is too crowded. The cool thing is this, they offer 3 carriers, Verizon (warp), att (dark star) and t-mobile. You choose. So we have 1 phone unlimited premium plan with primary line on Verizon secondary line on att an other phone primary on Verizon a secondary on t-mobile. Yes fir that cost! No kidding! And no charge to switch your primary if needed. So the phone get 2 signals and you choose which one to use to call out an you can give out your 2 phone numbers. So we have service from all 3 major carriers! So far so good angled the folks on the phone were great, and so was the chat.

I just checked my down load speed with Verizon. I can’t hardly believe the speed I’m getting 699 MBPS. We are 7 miles from town. I don’t know where the tower is and it is 5G.
