Big Sky Paint Chips

Our new rig has the textured paint below the front cap. It was transported and arrived without any damage.

I wonder if the textured paint has some kind of additive that is supposed to strengthen it and prevent chipping? On a non-BigSky, the entire front area is smooth (at least on our last two rigs). It would make sense that there is some kind of additive to give it the texture and strength since that area would logically be the area of the most abuse from road factors. Perhaps another interesting topic of discussion for those at the rally. Inquiring minds would like to know!!

I have 3 trucks with the Line-X spray in bed liners. In 10 years of hard use hauling tractor equipment, steel fence post and other heavy metal items the beds other than being dirty are in perfect shape. I went to the Line-X web site and see they have many colors that can now be sprayed on. I am going to talk to them about my Big Sky.

I am interested to hear what they tell you. I called two installers and got basically the same response from both. They can match the paint but the color is not guaranteed to last. It is very pricey. The estimate I got was $800 - $1,000 for just the area below the overhang. Seemed out of line to me but apparently the color additive is the cost driver.

Carl..I got the same quote. The texture also bothers me. Bingo the texture did no good at all.I have a lot of questions to ask at the rally. The Rock tamers have done a fair job. The thing is the chips really stand out because the white of the gel coat stands out.

It seems to me Michael and Kat had the best idea and that was put diamond plate sheet metal on that area. Theirs was done because a road alligator did some damage to the fiberglass front area and they put it on and then had it painted to match the unit. Heck, if you get the right diamond plate, that alone would be good for me without the paint! Stops the rock chips and not problem with having to match the paint then either!

Yes I checked into the diamond plate option. They have several different options all of them very expensive. I do however think that is the best solution . After I ask my many questions of the right people at the rally I will make a decision. Keystone had to know???? that would be a problem area. My unit was painted at Maple City Collision on E Kercher Rd right near the Montana plant. They do many brands there and IMO will know what will work and what will not. We have a appointment to see them before the rally. Besides after 14 months we are out of the touch up paint they gave us at the last rally.
