BF Goodrich Commercial TA

There is a member of a camping club I belong to wanting to sell a set of BF Goodrich Commercial TA's that have less than 1000 miles on them. They upgraded their axles is the reason for selling them. They are 235 85 16 and I currently have Goodyear Marathons 235 80 16 on my 5er that came from the factory. My concern is the max load rating on the TA's is 3042 lbs. and the Marathons are 3402. I realize the TA's are a better tire than what I have. Will they work with my 5er.

They will work ,and it seems common on this forum for some to put a less rated tire than the OEM on their trailer, and many others that recommend it. I wouldn't recommend it, but opinions vary.

My biggest concern with the tire in question, does it fall in the time period of the recall on that tire.

The date code on the tire is 50th week of 2012. Googled recall and looks like it was from 13th week of 2010 until 29th week of 2012 so they are after the recall period.

TA's are good ones, ran them on my rig.....

Kind of boils down to how much weight you're carrying on your axles. In our case there would be no way as we're running 13K plus on the axles.
So should run you rig across the scales loaded for travel and see exactly where you stand.

We ran them on our previous lighter Montanas an 03 2955 and even our 07 3400 model and they were fine. They are a really good tire and we have had them on several of our trucks over the years with great results.

I have run them with no problems. You did not say how much he is asking. If I was in your place price would make the decision on this one.

I run them on my rv and tv and am pleased with them. Ran them on my last monte also with no problems. Check the price as I have a dealer that sells his last year new stock for around $115 per tire. Then you have to pay for mounting, so still getting a new tire for less than $125. But don't be afraid of the brand as several of us are running them.

Somewhere on here is an explanation of how a trailer tire is rated and how a truck tire is rated. The rating margins for speed and weight vary quite a bit. Do a search (perhaps "tire rating") would bring up the info. It was posted about a year ago.

ST tires have very little "reserve capacity" and are speed rated at no more than 65 mph- ST tires are not to be used on a pickup truck or any other powered vehicle- LT tires have more "reserve capacity" and are speed rated above and beyond an ST tire- LT tires can be used on a pickup truck and/or a commercial trailer with confidence- Replacement tires are much more available all across the nation in the LT designation- JMHO- Don

Without knowing what your trailer weighs loaded, minus the pin weight, you are taking chances. Many Montanas are within the weight limits - barely - but some are considerably over, especially when loaded. I would not rely on any tire's over capacity ratings.

I replaced my Marathons with these last fall. I'm satisfied. I also ran Firestone Transforce HT's on my 2955RL without problems.

I have Commercial TA's on my Montana, but be careful. There was a recall about a year ago and I got all five of my tires replaced for free. You will have to take the tire information to any Commercial TA dealer and then they can tell you if they were included in the recall. I also found the recall notice on line and took a print out of it to the dealer. Good luck.

I run them on my 2955RL and love them. Of course, they are within the weight limits. Take your weight and divide by 4 to get how much each tire should handle. If they will work for you, I'd buy them in a heartbeat at a good price.

Love these tires. I have had them on my trailer for the last 6 years and 29K miles. Still look good but will be replacing soon due to age. Have had zero problems. Will be replacing with the same tire. My unit is not as heavy as many on this forum. Jim

I have had the BFG TA's for 3 years and have not had any issues with them. My first set was recalled but they were replaced without any problem or cost.

I wouldn't buy them. My twin 0909 BFG TA's failed within hours of each one in Nov 2012. First one got a sidewall delamination flap, held pressure until after I got to the tire shop. Mate failed catastrophically/lost tread one month (but only 2-3 hours rolling time) later. My NEWEST BFG tire was recalled and replaced in Sept 2012 with a Michelin LT/MS2. I filed a claim with BFG over the failed tire. They denied it. Was a big hassle changing both 0909 tires so close together in rural TX. NO more BFG for me! (I know Michelin owns them)
