Awning Sun Screen

Question: Camping World sells a "Patty O'Shade" , a 6 1/2 lb x 4 1/2ft x 15ft sun screen that fits on a slide grove on the trailer awning. I am told that the sun screen can be left on the awning and rolled right up witrh the awning. The awning has a metal cover over it when rolled up, will the sun screen cause a problem when rolled up with the awning and the metal cover?

My Patty O'Shade comes off before the awning is stowed. Motors are expensive, hint hint. Less stress.

We have one never tried to roll it up with the awning. Does not look like it would work.

We have one also. I THINK it could be rolled up with the awning. But I have never tried it. Don't think I will. We have a manual awning. It would definitely make the roll size larger. Might even be a problem with the pull strap not being long enough with the larger diameter roll.

I roll mine up often with the awning, however my awning does not have the metal cover. I do remove the sun screen before stowing the awning for travel. Have done this MANY times with no problems, but who knows when it could happen.

I've rolled ours up in the awning a few times for severe weather/wind only. It really taxes the motor. Wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis for fear of burning up the motor.

We have the sun pro with a 12" drop with zipper that stays on the roll and rolls up with the awning, when we need the shade we zip on the flap and tie it down at an angle.......sunpro.com

I would not roll it up with the sun screen on it. You set the spring tension for just the awning, with added weight, the spring would be 'lighter' tension-wise, also, the light-weight winding components would be under added stress... as our learned MOC members have stated.

We always remove ours when putting ready for travel but that means we do not use the sun screen as often because we are moving around to much. Retiring soon (8 days)and new rig has electric awning with more time to stay in one place look forward to using the screen much more in the future....

We also went with the sunshade from Sun Pro. It is a quality product and has 5 grommets rsther than two. We had the Patty O Shade, but it did not hold up well after several uses. To your original question, we did not roll up our sunshade with the Patty O Shade. The Sun Pro design with the zippered section is fast to remove and we never remove the 12" strip from the awning bar.

I dream about putting a hard cover on mine.

I have the electric and with nothing added the motor always sounds like it's on it's last leg! Sounds like batteries are about to die BUT they are full. Everything else works like they are fully charged also.

We have been intending to purchase a sun shade for some time but just never got around to it. After reading this thread especially kylec2 we have purchased a SunPro with the ProZip upgrade. Our next trip will be at the Mid-Atlantic Rally and we will see how it works. Also, our spot for this winter in FL is facing west so will need a sun block for the afternoons. I am continually altering, remodeling, or buying something because of information learned here on the MOC.
