Several years ago I had an early AM tee time. Since dw is a late sleeper, I locked the door handle when I left. Later she gets up and goes outside with out her key. Once the door shuts she is locked out. So now if I leave I lock the dead bolt and not the handle.

Happened to us too. Bernie left early and when I got up to take our dog for a walk the door locked when I shut it behind me. I had to call him to come let me in from an hour away.

Mounted a lockbox with a keypad unlock cover in the propane bottle compartment. It holds an extra set of door and compartment keys so this will not happen to either of us.

Not sure if this same problem as described so far, but I was locked in and had to call wife to open door from outside. Removing door lock to replace it, I found several of the screws holding the lock set together had backed out, I assume due to vibration. reseated everything with locktite. Seems to work like new. We'll see!

Same thing happened to us. Our keys were inside, including our locked truck keys. We were just going out to have a brewski under the awning. Ended up having to break in(the basement where my tools were was unlocked). Couldn't believe how easy it was. Just used a common screwdriver between door and jam and then the handle. Popped right open. Put a small dent in the aluminum door trim and broke the door lock. Was going to replace the lock set but then I thought it would eventually happen again, being how I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. So now it's just the deadbolt to lock the door and you must have your keys to lock it. I suppose there is a way to disable the door lock without having to break something. But,,,, it worked for us.

Exact same thing happened to my wife in our previous SOB. I was over an hour away on the golf course near Tampa. She ended up spending several hours sitting on the picknic table waiting for me. Luckily she had the dog with her. Since then, we have always had a spare key hidden away in a magnetic key box. Although, it never happened again (7 years with that same rig) better safe than sorry!
