Air Conditioning at 110 deg

We are in Arizona now... yes, yes, I know...what are we doing in Arizona in July. Our 42 ft 5th wheel has 2 Coleman air conditioners. We have seen temperatures hitting110 degrees during the day and staying above 80 at night. Our AC units keep up after about 8:00pm but by noon, temperatures are creeping up. By 4:00 pm, interior temps are hitting mid to upper 80s. In these conditions we only expect them to reduce the temperatures by maybe 20 degrees. Our walls are only 2" thick, and we have single pane windows, so maybe we need to install a 3rd AC unit. Our unit uses a ducted system for the air conditioners but I'm thinking the duct system reduces air flow. We noticed the larger slide-outs are considerably warmer than the central area of the trailer. Has anyone done anything to increase the air flow from the 2 systems, particularly in the slide-outs.

We bought that same portable AC at Lowe’s a couple of weeks ago in San Antonio because our living room 15k unit was having issues (long story with the ending still to come). It was hot in San Antonio and we were going to spend several days on the coast at Port Aransas where it’s always hot and humid. Bought that portable unit to supplement the ailing 15k unit and we were able to freeze meat!!!

I set it up to exhaust out the slide window. For travel, I put it in our half bath…I have to lift it up over the toilet and it fits nice and snug between the toilet and the cabinet. It will be a permanent fixture in our rig now, and it was a heck of a lot cheaper than a roof mounted 3rd AC. It is a bit heavy, but I figured out how to handle it.

We did have to manage electrical loads however…a single 20 amp breaker seems to control all outlets in the slides, so we could not use the air fryer at the same time with the portable AC running because it tripped the breaker.

We spend a great amount of time in Louisiana and temperatures there get pretty hot along with the high humidity making almost unbearable weather conditions.

When the roof (yes, I use a infrared lazar pointer thermometer) says the roof top is 130 degrees and the inside of the ceiling says it's 85, I know the AC is doing it's best, even with the ducts in the ceiling.

We have 3 fans we keep blowing to circulate the air better and this helps tremendously. The heat is not so unbearable as long as air is moving. We purchased 3 of these, they are great! Very powerful and can be positioned any number of ways:

The other thing we do, and you can do this too with GREAT improvement, is to close one of your slides you are not currently using during the heat of the day.

If you are hanging out in the living room, then retract the bedroom slide. Reducing the square footage will make a big difference. When you move to the bed room, open that slide back up and close the living room slide. Again, this will reduce the square footage, keeping you much cooler.

Not everyone likes doing this, but if heat is your current enemy, then pulling in one slide in an area of the camper not being used for a period of time is a no brainer.

Good luck.

Try to eliminate as much solar gain as possible, won't be easy. Buy a roll of Reflitix from a big box store, cut to fit the skylights, and any east or west facing windows.

If you have the infamous blade diffusors, remove them. If you still have the foam filter elements in the returns, make sure they're clean. Order some horsehair type polyester filter medium and cut to fit the returns, it's much less restrictive and will help airflow.

I've asked this question before, but does the prepped for third AC in the kitchen connect to the same thermostat as the rear AC?

I searched “3rd AC” and many threads came up. The screen shot of Bourbon County’s response answers your question best…”prepped” = power only.

Every RV I have owned for the past 30 years had the “ceiling dump” style AC where the controls are on the face plate at the ceiling. Surely now they make a remote control for those ACs, but I really don’t know.
