Nearing the end of our two-week vacation traveling across Colorado, my wife and I stayed 3-nights in a remote private RV Campground in Colorado Springs. On Friday, August 1st, after the previous night’s heavy thunderstorm, I woke up and went outside where I saw that someone had vandalized our 5th wheel trailer and our pickup truck.

Our 5th wheel trailer had large swastikas spray painted red, one on each side and one on the back. Walking around the trailer I was horrified to see they had also painted one huge swastika on each of both sides of my pickup truck; they covered both doors and windows on each side.

No other vehicles or trailers in the campground were vandalized. There was no mistaking that our vehicles were targeted because of a small “Team Trump” sticker on the back window of our pickup truck. This was the third of three days in the campground, and someone believed it was their right to vandalize two strangers’ vehicles because of a Trump sticker. Early in the morning, while we were sleeping inside our trailer, they brought their spray paint can to our vehicles so they could visibly demonstrate their sickness, their Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) illness, by vandalizing our property.

After calling and meeting with the Sheriff’s Deputy (he took pictures and wrote a report), and meeting with the campground owner and staff, we started our drive home. We had planned on leaving that morning and driving to a campground in New Mexico on the way home to Arizona. Rather than stay at another campground in vehicles covered in swastikas, we drove 12-hours straight home.

Looking back on this I’m glad I didn’t catch them in the act as the confrontation could have ended badly for me and/or them. And, in hindsight, their actions could have been worse and my wife, myself, and our dog could have been harmed and the damage to our vehicles could have been even worse.

One thing is clear, we won’t be visiting Colorado again except to drive through the state to other, more hospitable locations. And yes, I could have not had a sticker on my truck, but this is America where we all should value and respect our freedoms. It’s not the America I grew up in, but I don’t live in the past so things will change for us going forward (cameras, more lighting, security, etc.). Wishing you all safe travels!

Definitely put a claim in with your insurance company. Hopefully, you will get a copy of the police report for the insurance company.

I made the decision a long time ago to remain A-political regarding signage on my vehicles and even on my own property at home. I also remained silent on social media about my "political" views for the very reason you just experienced.

I remember a few years ago (I can't remember if it was this forum or a different forum), concerns about a specific campground that prohibited flying the American Flag from ones own camper. There was lots of debate on that subject. The conversation drifted into other types of flags then too.

I came to the conclusion, that campgrounds are not the place to express in open fashion political or religious views. What is acceptable for one person is highly offensive to another.... and basically, when it comes to camping, .... unless someone is on a specific mission, signage and flags really detract form the camping experience .... at least for me ... When I'm camping, I don't want the "advertisement". I'm there to get away from all of life, all of it's problems, all of it's headaches, all of it's anger, frustration, anxieties, and all the stuff going on that set's everyone off.

Don't misunderstand me here. You are well within all your American rights and liberties to display the signage. Just beware, by doing so, you have now labeled yourself, and it doesn't matter if you can walk on water and feed the world for free, someone is going to be opposed to you and will take offense.

sorry that happened to you. you have the right to your opinions without fear of having to worry about someone harming you or your property. when i was working a young man i worked with came in to work one morning and the sides of his truck were painted also. the mechanic at work took wd40 to the part that was painted and it all came off without hurting the truck paint. he said as long as the graffiti was fresh it would come off. if it were me i would for sure take pictures in case it did not all come off or hurt the paint on the truck. i always think of something like this happening while we sleep. no walmart boon docking for me because of this. you should not have to worry in a rv park.

Wow - that is really sad! Sorry you were treated that way in my FORMER favorite state that we have lived in during my construction career days. Those people are terribly sad and unhappy, probably beyond help at this point. Thankyou for sharing this!

For those of you that want to visit Austin someday - my advice is to stay in your car and do a drive-by. We do not leave our vehicles unattended anywhere in Austin...one of us stays in the vehicle while the other shops. The city+county is filled with like-minded people who would do the same thing to your vehicle and RV. In addition, if you are involved in a crime against your person or a theft - the local DA is not charging perps with crimes and generally chooses not to prosecute very few of those who were initially charged. He says "Crime is down in Austin!"...yes it is! - when you do not charge or prosecute anybody, the numbers go down. 10 years ago and decades prior, our county (Williamson County north of Travis County/Austin) had a reputation for zero tolerance on crime. Sadly, it is not that way anymore, but still much better than Austin.

I have an emblem for Texas A&M on all my cars and RVs...the Tee-sips leave them alone because they can’t read. "Tee-sip" is Aggie slang for a texas u. longhorn.

I'm very sorry this happened to you. Short of catching them in the act, there is not much we can do to those responsible. Let's keep the political commentary down and concentrate on how to repair this rig. I would take it to a paint and body shop; they will know what chemicals are safe to use.

Thanks to the Site Team for allowing me to post this. Hopefully it can stay up.

I appreciate everyone's kind/positive comments.

I did file a report with the Sheriff in Colorado Springs and got a Case # for my insurance. I did file two claims, one for each vehicle. I took both the trailer and truck to their dealerships and they both were able to remove the spray paint. Work is ongoing but it was mostly successful. One of the decals on the side of the trailer has to be replaced.

We won't be going back to Colorado except, perhaps, to drive through it to another state.

And, the perpetrators have taught me a lesson, one that I'm already familiar with. It's OK for them to destroy, vandalize, and hurt others often for something as simple as having a sticker on their vehicle (or wearing a hat, etc.). We who don't agree with them feel strongly about our convictions and freedoms but they "win" as most of us are not willing to express ourselves publicly anymore as we fear their wrath. The sticker and the American flag sticker will be coming off.

Dan,

Sorry to see this. Do not believe it to be CO specific - could have happened as easily in AZ. I choose not to advertise my political views.

Out of tragedy, lessons are learned for those who are willing TO learn. For others, it's just an excuse to continue down a negative path in life as a way to justify faulty behavior. With that said...

Your experience is a sobor reminder for all of us who RV to be even more diligent as we travel.

RVing, over-all, has always been a wonderful, adventure filled lifestyle. But with "travel" came certain precautions everyone is aware of, basically recognizing "seedy" locations and being aware of threatening situations and leaving (if necessary) before we become victims of something that will bring sorrow and misfortune for us. I think all of us have planned on staying somewhere and ended up changing our minds and kept moving after we saw the situation "there."

No doubt the campground you stayed at appeared to be safe and who would have ever thought you'd become of victim there. But it did happen. Were there any indicators a situation was in the making when you first arrived? probably not? Did you notice any "unsavory" people taking an interest in your rig when you first arrived? probably not. Did you notice any kids or teen-agers or young people or gang members hanging around the RV park? probably not. Were you even thinking about these things when you arrived and set up camp? probably not. Who would have though????

It's a sad day we, as travelers living our dream of enjoying the magnificent USA that we have to be on such an alert ALL the time. It's a sad day that we can't trust anything any more. It's a sad day that we have to anticipate folks are going to be evil and they have to prove their goodness, instead of believing people are good now we have to assume they are just evil. Call this being "paranoid"???? Yes ... unfortunately, this is the new reality.

Your story is a wake -up call, especially for me. I am always on "alert" of my surroundings. My wife thinks I'm a bit over-board sometimes with my skepticism as I trust no-one when traveling or no situation. But now, my anxiety will probably jump up a notch!

I'm am very, very, very glad no physical harm was done to any person. I'm glad your repair shop was able to restore your property. And I'm VERY glad your insurance company came through for you. But I do want to THANK-YOU for posting your story. It serves as a wake-up call for all of us to be even more aware of our situational surroundings .... ALL the time.

it is really sad statement about our current society also 4 years of no law enforcement breeds this kind of behavior especially in blue states

Also if you people are afraid to put out your beliefs whatever they are, then the other side wins

This thread has served it's purpose and the rig has been repaired. Thread locked.
