50 amp surge protector replacement options

I think most of us have a Hughes Power Watchdog or Progressive; have not heard bad things about either. My Hughes is several years old and has had zero issues.

I have a 50 amp Watchdog for the Monte (3-4 years old, Bluetooth only for the iPhone app) and I have a 30 amp watchdog for the motorhome (new this year - Bluetooth or WiFi to app).

My Progressive died 5-6 years ago. As the original owner, I had a lifetime warranty. They replaced it with my proof of purchase (keep those receipts!!). I think Progressive was bought out by a Venture Capitalist group and they have changed the warranty terms. But it can't hurt to give them a call.

I purchased it used about 5 yrs ago. I’m sure there’s no warranty. Just looking for a quality replacement.

We have a Progressive EMS that we have used for 6 almost 7 years. We now use the Progressive when the camper is parked at the house. Just bought a Hughes Watchdog bluetoooth/wifi for when we are traveling because we can monitor power when we are away from the camper. Both are good EMS units.

I win!…for finding the most bad breakers in two different campgrounds in the month of July…well, the Watchdog found them. I have been camping in RVs since summer 1967 (with the family in a travel trailer) - and I don’t remember EVER having to report a bad breaker to the campground folks to get it replaced. Now we had two bad breakers in one month! The last one gave up the ghost early evening on a Saturday. The space next to us was empty, so I ran my extension cord to that pedestal and we made it just fine until we left Monday morning. I told the campground host what I was doing, and fortunately that space was not booked. That is the reason I lug around that big extension cord!

I replaced my 50 amp portable Progressive EMS just a few months ago. We were parked long term at a State Historic site and the power started going "funky". It took several weeks for them to finally identify the problem.

One electrician thought our Progressive might have been part of the problem. After he pointed it out to me the rubber casing around the male end plug was cracking out, and I'd not noticed, we decided it was time for a new one. Ordered it off of Amazon, had it 24 hours later, plugged in and working great ever since. .... And oh yes, "they" finally did figure out the original power problem. It was stripped screws inside the breaker section of the power box at the pole.

For what it's worth, our old Progressive ran 24x7x365 non-stop, except when actually traveling on the road, for 8 years. I think the unit itself was still functioning fine. But, like I stated above, the wire casing was cracking out after being exposed outside for ... what??? 7 years??? non-stop???

Ours is a progressive, hard wired in the camper. DH installed it himself about 14 years ago. Knock on wood we have had no issues with it. Yes I just knocked on wood.

I would also recommend the Hughes choice. I’ve ha both progressive potable 50 amp unit go bad.

When we bought our new 3100RL I had the dealer install the Watchdog Power Center. Not only does it do the normal power protection stuff the regular Watchdog does it will also boost the voltage if it is too low or lower the voltage if it is too high. Some of the electronics in these trailers are sensitive to high or low voltages. Like AC units, TV's and Microwave to name a few. Not a cheap product but cheaper than having to replace an AC unit, not to mention the inconvenience.
