Unusual tire wear

We have a 2008 Montana 3000 RK we bought in 2017. It has Supercargo radial tires made in 2016, ST235/80R16, Load range E. The tread on the rear left tire is worn MUCH more than the other tires. I am pretty good at keeping the tires properly inflated. Any ideas on what might cause this? Thanks.

I assume the wear is on the inside of the tire. This is indicative of a bent axle or spindle. It might be a tread seperation but unlikely. Replace or straighten the axle are the usual solutions.

How urgent is the axel/spindle repair? If we replace the tires would it be reasonable to drive a couple thousand miles to get home before we do the bigger repair job?

You can reverse the existing tire (and wear down the other side) plus carry a spare or two to get you home. It all depends on how fast the tire wears down.

I only agree with part of that alignment article. What you should shoot for with about any tandem axle trailer is street side + 3/4 degree camber ... curbside + 1/2 degree camber. Both axles 1/16" to 1/8" toe in. I mostly agree with the guys measurement procedure as far as checking the axle's squareness to the frame. I don't see how you can put a piece of angle iron or 2X4 along the outer edge of the tires and get any meaningful result unless your axle's is way off. If you have the correct toe in that a competent shop shoots for, the angle iron would never lay flat along the tires.

Just check to see if your axle has shifted back on the left side. Start by measuring between the tires on the left and the right. You might have sheared the center pin on the spring. Easy fix if so.

I would replace the tire if its damaged enough and you don't think it will make the entire trip. Also you could move the worn tire to a different spot and put a better tire in it's place. I would take the rig to a alignment shop to have it checked. You have to go to a specialized shop to have the work done.

Unusual tire wear

I had our 2018 3791rd checked out at a semi trailer repair facility. The alignment was off 3/4Ēon one axle from the factory. The shop used a laser alignment machine to dial it in. They ended up pulling the axle off. Stripping it down. Pressing it in a computerized press. Got it perfect. Reinstalled everything. 4 hours it was done and just over $400. I thought that was fair. They checked all four wheels. And fixed 2 wheels on the same axle. It pulls perfect now.

Find a shop that does axle alignments and have it checked. You probably have a bad axle. You'll probably be stuck replacing that axle.

Check your frame and hangers very closely. Our 2008 3000RK cracked the frame, broke hangers and rolled onto the tires. Must have happened a few times because they made a kit for this problem. $5000 repair ( ouch ) but is bulletproof now. Luckily it happened in the parking lot of our destination. It really bothers me that there was a kit on the market already. Moryde must have known about this.

We had a similar issue last year. I thought The axel alignment was off, but it turned out to be cracked wheel bearings. A quick way to check the bearings are damaged is to lift the wheel off the ground and try to rock the wheel back and forth. If there is some play while Rocking the wheel have the bearings checked.

We have never had any problem with our 2008 3000RK. I did torque all the axle bolts. They were not very tight from factory. If yours are loose you could have had the axle shift.

It would be worth your while to find an alignment center where you are at, have the axles aligned, wheel bearings checked and packed and brakes checked. Most places that align trucks and trailers will do RV's. And with the age of your RV, if you have never replaced them, have them check your shackles and their bushings. They are on the springs, the spring hangers and the equalizers. Usually the bushings from the factory are plastic. I replaced all shackle bolts and bushings 2 yrs ago on my 2010. Some of the bushings were almost worn thru. I replaced mine with greasable bolts and brass bushings. The grease zerk is in the head of the bolt and they normally install them with the head of the bolt on the outside. This makes it hard to get a grease gun on the zerk when it is next to the tire. So I had them install mine with the head of the bolt on the inside so I can crawl under the RV and access all of the zerks without having to remove a tire. I'm not sure what kind of tire wear bad shackle busings manifest but you are wasting your money fixing the axles and bearings if the shackle bushings are bad.

It only took them a day to do all of this to mine and they even replaced my brakes too. I'm in the club that blew an RV tire once and it cost $3800 to fix the damaged fenders. Your RV is saying ouch and you won't get too many opportunities to fix that ouch if you continue to run before it says stop, even if you rotate or exchange tires.

Great to hear from other 3000RK owners..
I have a 2007 3000RK and just had it aligned.
both axes have been upgraded to 7K (was 5300)
Goodyear G614 tires.
I did have the frame crack, which has been repaired,
and replaced a few cracked spring hangar brackets over the years.
I have More-ride HD shakels with wet bolts new springs and replaced the More-ride shear spring (center suspension link)

Start with checking bearings, bushings and remaining suspension
If nothing has been replaced best place to start.

When done still have it aligned.
Even with new axles mine was off and needed the alignment
I used straight Line suspension in Mesa AZ.
you need a trailer alignment specialist.

Before the alignment I had extreme tire wear on the front axel.
Now no issues at all and slightly better mileage.

Note with the More-Ride LRE4000 suspension system,
you can not use the true track alignment cams and need to have the axles bent to the proper alignment.

I'm off to Alaska in Late May, my rig gets heavy use and has held up well.

We had the same issue when we got to our southern base last fall. Thought alignment but it turned out to be a bent axel. In side of our left rear tire was down to the steel belt. I had checked air and inspected all tires before we left home. We had traveled about 1300 miles to our destination. I don't know where we bent the axel, a pothole or bridge transition maybe. Anyway warrantee won't cover it, it's "impact damage". Per dealer suggestion I'm going to try for a claim on our comp insurance.
I would be leery about going a couple thousand miles with just a replaced tire. Maybe two or three tires will get you there but you still have the cost of a new axel waiting for you.

After about a year, I had one tire wear horribly uneven on my previous travel trailer. I posted on another forum asking for possible causes. I got a shlew of responses, mostly about bent frames and out of align frames. I had suggestions to take the camper for inspections to this company and that company and spend all kind of money on some kind of repair.

I appreciated all the sage advise, and then finally followed my own heart. I simply purchased 4 new tires and used the trailer for another 5 years and never had any uneven wear on any tire again.

Bottom line: Nothing wrong with alignment or the axle. What was wrong? It was just an inferior tire. That simple.

I've had the inferior Chinese tires, one that blew at interstate speed did $4,200 worth of damage. Had a road service come change the tire, and subsequently found the left rear tire would continuously wear out on the inside. Finally found a trailer alignment place and they straightened the axle. The tech showed me where "someone" had used a jack half way to the midpoint of the axle, resulting in bending the axle. Don't every let anyone jack your fiver except at the springs, and as close to the inside of the tire as possible. BTW, wound up sending all 5 Chinese tires back to the west coast for some reimbursement as all the tires had steel belts coming through the tire tread or sidewall.

I had the same thing on our previous trailer. Blew right front tire and tore up side of trailer. While I was under there changing that tire I looked across to opposite side same axel and that tire was down to cords. I replaced all 4 tires and never another problem, was just cheapo tires.
