No heat pump for Montana's

Went to the local Montana dealer yesterday to look at the new models. While talking with the salesman, I happen to mention that the idea of having a heat pump might be a good option for me. I was told Montana does not have a option for a HP. I told the salesman that Alpine (both Keystone Luxury Products) has a HP as standard feature. (long pause) He look at me like I was stupid. I asked if he could call his dealer Rep to check. He did, and was told No heat pump for Montana. Dealer says it can be added for more $$$. Question is WHY won't keystone give this option? Seems to me, since the heat pump is part of AC unit it would be easy to just swap out existing AC unit. Am I missing something?

The 2015 Big Sky models are listed with "Quiet cool airconditioning system with heat pump", so I presume some models are starting to include heat pumps in their features.

When we put our second air in last year had the option of the heat strip. Assume that is basically the same thing.

Bill ... heat pump mentioned in this topic is similar to your home heat pump (if you have one). A reversing valve allows the A/C to draw heat from the outside air and blow it inside the RV. It theoretically works better than heat strips. I don't use the heat pump in my stick house because natural gas is way cheaper to achieve the same comfort level where I live.

Our 2014 Big Sky has the heat pump units. We have wintered in Houston Tx area since purchase so we have used them more. Saves the back from lugging around the 100lb propane bottles as much.

A heat strip is just an electric heating element, basically the same as an electric space heater. As noted above, a heat pump reverses the operation of the air conditioner so that it heats the air going into the trailer instead of cooling the air goint into the trailer. A heat pump is more efficient than an electric heating element, but generally doesn't work very well at temps colder than the upper 20's.

Basically it's pony up for the Big Sky package or Keystone won't let you have one. Heat strips are another matter. Forest River is currently recalling some of theirs due to problems with fires.

There is (or was) a company making an aftermarket electric heating element for the furnace, as a dealer add on. This would only be good if you were someplace where the electric was paid for, or it was cheap. But, it was definitely NOT a cheap addition, over $800.00 if I remember right. There waa a brand of trailer (don't remember which one) years ago, that had a heat pump in it. Heat pumps can be problematic, though.

Even for 2016 the only way to get a heat pump in a Montana is to get the Big Sky series. Makes no sense to me but what do consumers know about what is good for them. Same as getting an upgraded awning with the aluminum protector. You want that then you. Need a Big Sky.
Things like these are just as easy to install and give customers the ability to customize their rig to actually work better for where they live or plan on visiting. Just my opinion, not Keystones obviously.
