Fresh Water tank cap leaks

I have a steady 1 drop per 3 seconds leak coming from my Fresh water tank via the cap. First I just tried hand tightening it, but it kept spinning. So I check to see if the clap holding the cap male and female fitting was loose and it was. Once tight, I could hand tighten the cap, but still the same leak.

Is this a common problem? Do I need a new cap? Do I need to use Teflon tap?

The fresh water tank drank is just a potable water hose with the cap assembly clamped on. Is there a superior solution made of brass that someone has tried??

I have the same problem. so I am going to remove the crimp style and add a stainless band clamp and see if that stops the leak. I am hooked up to city water right now so I haven't fixed it yet.

You should not have any leak at all. You should also not have to use Teflon tape. Depending on which model trailer you have, the cap should have a tapered fit inside, for a tight seal. It's possible someone put the wrong cap on. Also, if it was loose, it may be damaged now, and it might be simpler to replace it with a new one. Also, consider the possibility that it might not be the cap itself, but it might be running down that hose from up above somewhere, and dripping off the cap.

Like said ... teflon tape will be a waste of time as the fitting seals off a taper not by the threads. There may be a cut or gouge in the taper either on the cap or base fitting. A new one's cost is minimal and easy to replace. Some have bought a ball valve and installed in place of the screw on cap/ftg. The valve and a pipe nipple to make it work on the end of the plastic hose can be had at any hardware store.

I removed mine and added a ball valve like Dieselguy stated.

If the fresh water fill you are talking about is the gravity fill cap, then the tank is overfilled or the 12v water pump is allowing city supply water to creep past its check valve into the tank. Neither situation is what you want. John

Mine came from the factory with a ball valve.

If it's the drain valve on the bottom then the solution is a ball valve which is what we did. If the water is coming from the fill area then it's the overflow tube located right next to the fill cap with a screen on the end. As John stated, if that's the problem you have water seeping into your fresh water tank, besides John's suggestion it could also be that your fill valve in the convenience center isn't closing totally.

Problem solved, except my clothes are soaked. The cap that leaked was on the bottom of the RV at the rear to drain the fresh water tank. I just cut off the existing cap assembly and put in a 1/2" barbed-to-threaded brass connector and then attached a brass ball valve to that. Nothing like 85 gallons of cold water squirting down on you to make you work faster.
