Who carries a mobility scooter/chair
Figured I would check here and see is someone else takes anything like a mobility scooter. After years of climbing telephone poles and falling off roof tops and thru floors fighting fires, my back and knees are a wreck. I have trouble walking longer distances like at big flea markets, fairs, heck even Walmarts etc. I have my Mom's old mobility chair that I have redone and want to use it, but not sure how to haul it with the trailer. I think it may be too heavy for the rear of the trailer and have thought maybe I should get a hitch installed on the front of the truck. It's too big for in the bed and also a little heavy to be lifting that high. So does anybody use one and how do you haul it along??? Thanks

The only thing I know about those units is that some weigh around 80 - 90 pounds. I built a couple handicap ramps last year for customers and needed some specs on the units they had, which were newer ones. I would think a front lift for your truck would be about the only option. I have a snowplow package on my Ford so I believe my front suspension is heavier. I don't know if that is something that would be needed for hauling that kind of weight on the front of your truck or not. Just some thoughts that you have already probably thought about.

Yeah that's why I didn't think it would do good mounted on the rear of the trailer. That's a lot of weight bouning around back there. My truck should be ok for the weight on the front since it is leveled, just worry bout blocking air flow.

I'm in need of help with walking and have a Lynx L3 mobility scooter that only weighs in at around 100#. Comes apart with the heaviest part weighing less than 30#. My DW and I have no problem putting into the truck bed or the Monte basement when hooked up.

That was a thought too, to buy a newer one that breaks down. I have an older Rascal that does not break down other then the seat coming off.

My GF has trouble walking long distances so I bought a handicap scooter last year. We had a travel trailer last year I was able to use ramps to get inside the main door. but we traded that in for a 2007 Montana 5th wheel. I had a hitch installed on the back when we bought it my plan is take it a hitch installer to have it modified so I can use a carrier to haul the scooter around. My only other option is to buy a small swivel wheel trailer

Dennis Hill "Hamrad" carries one on the front of his Ford and I do not believe he has any problems with his setup. I am sure he will stop by here and add a little more info.

With the older trailers there is a lot of room between the back of the truck and the front of the trailer under the neck. We used to carry ours on the back of the truck on a cargo carrier. The steel mesh ones from Harbor Freight. It will clear the front of the trailer if you push the carrier all the way in. You will have to redrill the holes for the pin. This will not work on the newer trailers. The front of the trailer is closer. That way you can carry the scooter with you after the trailer is unhooked.

I have a mobility scooter. I had a trailer hitch mounted on the front of my truck. Was on my PSD 250 and when I upgraded to the 450 I transferred it. My scooter weighs at least 100 pounds. The lift probably weighs about 70 pounds. Don't know for certain what my front hitch weighs but I'd guess about 80 pounds. This setup in one form or another has seen at least 20 thousand miles.
Rough roads always give me a real thrill! The whole thing will bounce a bit. A couple of times I thought the thing was going to land on my hood ----- Or to come off the lift and get run over!
Before we got the lift we carried the cart in the trailer. I used some 3/4 inch plywood and made a ramp. This got old very quickly. It does have the advantage of not having to have stuff on the front of the truck. Also you don't have to worry about the weather. With the cart on the front of the truck and there is wet weather I have a cover I put over cart.
Good luck. Dennis

Hamrad do you have problems with motor running hot when the cover is on the scooter? our scooter weights 185 lbs the carrier is 75 lbs.

Kampincrazy,
I've never had any heating problems with or without the cover. And that goes for the 250 as well as the 450. One of the several things that I've been really happy about. Good luck. Dennis
