Diesel fuel in Kansas

While heading through Kansas this afternoon, noticed the need for a fill-up. Passed through Kingman, KS and and saw no stations with diesel. Turned the rig around to look more, and still none. Stopped at a feed store that was open, and asked the owner, and he started apologizing for the town not having retail diesel, said the last diesel station closed about 1 1/2 years ago. As we were getting pretty low, he volunteered to lead me over to a card lock facility and I payed him cash for enough diesel to safely get us to the next town that had diesel. Just fair warning--if you find yourself on US-54 in Kansas, don't expect to fill up in Kingman, get it in Wichita or Pratt.

Interresting, no diesel in those three towns I bet they dont have many 18 wheelers going through there either. diesel is 40 to 50 cents per gal higher than gas here in california. looks like the oil industry is pushing consumers to go to gas, Dodge is pushing the gas opperated trucks with the big gasser hemi engin.

As more and more services disappear from rural towns the card lock stations for locals are becoming a regular thing. Farms get bulk delivery and so locals buy gas from the card stations. They're usually a co-op and since they don't employ anyone to wait on customers they can provide the service. Doesn't help if your from out of town, but it does allow locals to get gas.

Dick is right and you see it more and more. I had that problem in Arkansas and ran with the low fuel light on for a long time. When I did find a station I put 26 gallons in a 26 gallon tank. That was how close we were to running out. It will not happen again. I now have a aux fuel tank in the bed of my truck.

Not that it will always help, but there are several different apps for smart phones to help locate fuel stops, plus there is an app for Pilot/Flying J, not sure about some of the other T/A, Loves etc, but I guess something worth looking into. We plan to carry 10 gal of emergency fuel on our Alaska trip next summer.

I would say the rural folks in Kansas are good folks, I ran into same type of situation when traveling through on my Harley a few yrs ago. Feller took me over to one of those stations and got gas for me.

I always check out the fuel availability when travelling a new route.

On Edit...The Next Exit is a good pub to have handy when on the road.

Having fuel available and hunting for stations is why I installed an aux fuel/tool box combo before heading to Colorado in October. A lot like having TPMS, it is good piece of mind. I fueled up every morning after leaving the campground, which gives me fuel for 600 to 700 miles. Course, only traveled about 450 per day. Just something else I didn't have to watch.
