What air compressor
Getting ready to upgrade to 17.5 wheels. & tires and need a 12v compressor that will deliver 110 - 125 lbs of compressor. What's out there

Since you'll likely not use it often, the Harbor Freight issue has worked well for me ... even comes with a snappy little carry case or used to anyways. Just check the head bolts for tightness per "OZZ".

I also have one of these and like it a lot. I had one break (I think it was from hooking it up to the tire before turning it on) but HF replaced it, no questions asked.

Whichever compressor you decide to get, I would recommend this 12 volt extension cord to go with it. I purchased this very same one and have already used it several times. Tim

The Harbor Freight model mentioned clips on to the battery, so that type of extension cord will not work. With regards to the compressor itself, Flymutt is correct, I have busted the diaphragm on two of these by hooking up to the tire and then starting the compressor. I guess the design does not anticipate the back pressure from the tire itself. Start the compressor, then attach to the valve stem, and it should be okay. The other thing about these compressors is you have to let them cool down after use, and particularly with a high psi tire. I finally gave up on the 12V models and pack around a Porter Cable 150 psi pancake compressor. But, I do have a built in generator to power it. There are more expensive 12v models out there that are highly recommended by some, in particular the Viair models.

I have the habor freight one but have not really used it. But, at the rally I used my neigbhors sears compressor and loved it....eary to go up to 110 psi. it is however a 110 voltage.

I have a Sears 110 volt compressor that I bought in 2002 for $99.95 I think and it is still going strong.

For the 12 volt ones, I have gone through 2 of the Harbor Freight compressors, didn't last to my expectations, so I got the Viair mine is a 450-C. They have many different models, continuous duty, intermittent duty and so on, if you use it a lot, get the 2.5 gallon tank to go with it, that reserve is very nice if you have a flat, or helping someone on the road. I have air horns, air bags on the hitch, an air chuck mounted on the truck. I will see if I can come up with some slide-shows.

Ozz I noticed that your compressor is mounted to the foot step of the running board mounting bracket, how is that compressor for noise and vibration? my B in L has one that he purchased and it was a very expensive one, producing a huge amount of PSI but can be heard above the engin noise how is yours in that area. can you provide us with a link where you got yours for us interrested members.

It does vibrate a little, and it is noisy, but I can live with it for the trade-off.

I've had one of these for over 4 years ... it's always worked. Like many things now days ... just depends I guess. In my case, the price was right and the performance acceptable. Like mentioned earlier, I do turn it on before I attach it to a tire and letting it cool before storing it isn't an issue for me.

I also have one of the Sears Craftsman $100 compressors that runs off 110v and does a great job. It looks like a self contained plastic covered bucket and puts out what I expect of it. I run it off my Honda 2000i or campground AC. Enough output for the tires or an air wrench and I don't have to spend five minutes to air up a tire. I've also been through a couple of the smaller ones and they are great for bikes, but not what I need them for on the road.

I got the Ryobi portable the uses the 18 volt lithium battery. I set the digital readout to desired pressure and turn it on and it shuts off when done. It is rated at 150psi. One side does tires, the other for blowing up air mattresss. All this convience for $35 from home depot with the VA discount. I have only used it to 75 psi but it works very well.

I have had a Harbor Freight one of these for 6 yrs and I have had use for it about 1-3 Xs a yr. BIG plus being able to use a 12v source for power...
