Excuse my ignorance on the photo, but is this a upgrade of the axle/wheel assembly for the model and year mentioned. I assume that if it is, this is most likely done to strengthen the basic unit or to replace it with a stronger more durable assembly. Is this correct?
Thanks.

It is the Mor Ryde independent suspension that replaces the OEM suspension on any brand any year any model. There is a ongoing thread that I can not find now on the subject of suspensions and I said I would post this picture if I could find it.

The Mor/ryde IS rates right up there with the Level-up for the greatest upgrade you can do to your RV, next would be the Disc Brake upgrade. We did all three upgrades on our Montana and what a difference, so when we ordered our SOB Level-up was standard but we added the optional Disc Brakes and just had the IS installed this past spring.

Again, excuse my ignorance, but what are the benefits of the IS? I assume that when one upgrades with this assembly, that you do 2 at a time, if so, then it takes 2 of these to complete the upgrade?
I also assume it is more heavy duty and more reliable. Is this available as an upgrade when purchasing a new unit? If so, we were not even aware this was out there. What is a ball park figure for this upgrade, if I may ask?
Thanks in advance for the reply back.

Gary, The IS system is axleless if that is a word! No axles between the opposing wheels! Independent movement of each wheel. Haven't got it and will think about it when and IF we ever get a different unit. At the present time, can't see putting it on a 2004 unit! Those that have it swear by it!

Hello gentleman
You may call the piece between the 2 spring mechanisms a Cross member for the suspension or an Axel.
The wheels, brake drums or disk are attached to a housing the bearings are in is called the “hub”.
The item that they are supported by that the inside of the wheel bearings is on is the “spindle”.
The square piece with the rubber mounted in it would be called a “spring or spring pack”.
The system that makes the assembly work in a much smother way is actually referred to a “trailing link” suspension system.
I find the biggest improvement in this trailing link suspension is the use of the rubber spring. That makes it much more compact than the air bag or air over oil strut. What makes it a smoother ride easer on the structure of the frame is the trailing link design.
Being that the entire unit is removable or installed as a unit I would still call the square tubing between the spring packs an axle.

The IS stands for Independent Suspension, thus each wheel moves independently and uses a Rubber Shear Spring. If offers increased travel compared to normal spring suspension and also gives the ability to align each wheel independently. Mor/ryde offers two versions, a 7K and an 8K system, approx 2600 for the 7 and approx 3200 for the 8.

Hi
Most Trailing Link suspension systems are independent until you get into heavy trucks.
Go on Mor/rydes web site and look at the color drawings of there IS system. You will note the hinge or pivot point of the arm (they call it Beam) is forward of the spindle. That is “Trailing Link”. This reduces the impact loads delivered to the frame.
Not all trailing link systems are independent but the best ones are.
It is a far superior type of suspension to the leaf spring type.
The only new idea is the rubber spring pack. Buses and trucks have been using this on non powered load carding axles for years. The problem with them was the sizes of the spring. The spring was commonly a coil spring, airbag or an air over oil shock strut. In reality the Mor/ryde system may well be improved by removing the rubber spring pack and replacing the shock absorber with an air over oil shock strut. While this may improve the system it creates more maintenance requirements.
The axle or cross member must be there to take the twisting load transmitted to the frame buy the spindle and spring pack. The spindle and pivot arm is out board of the frame. An “I” beam will not withstand very much twisting and being straight is what give it its strength.
Phil P
PS most battery powered Golf cars are trailing link suspension for the rear axle and that is the drive axle.

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the great information! Now I will have to absorb it and see if I can understand it all. I can definitely now see how it would be a much better system. So if for a 8000 lb. rated assembly it cost approx. $3200 for a single assembly, it would cost approx. $6400 for the two assemblies to complete the job - correct?
This now begs the question, is this upgrade something that those of us who are not full timers and probably put at the most - 3-5k miles a year traveling to invest into? I realize this is a personal question, but isn't the standard equipment sufficient for most of us? I guess when it comes right down to it, it is just personal preference and how we want to spend our money. I haven't heard of any failures of the standard equipment other than the one post just recently or are their many that aren't reported?
Thanks again everyone for the very informative information.

I do not know what the today price but the stated price would be for both units. Mine was @ 2500.00 in 2009.
