Blowouts!!!!!

This is the 2nd time that we experienced 2 blow outs just a few miles apart. It seems that when one blows it destroys it's neighbor! Anywhoo....it begs the question...how many people carry 2 spare tires? We are thinking it is time for us to do that.

Once you have one tire go out on you there is a tremendous load suddenly thrown onto the tire on the same side. Of course you didn't indicate that was the case. If the second blowout was on the "good side" then I don't have a clue.

I would not carry two spares. First just finding the space would be a problem. You might do as others have suggested and run with a "stronger" tire. Lonnie B. listed several brands and models sometime ago that would probably do away with most blowouts. However there is no such thing as a tire that won't blowout. Good luck. Dennis and Mary Kay

G614 for a 2955 is *WAY* overkill. Any "good" 16" LT Load Range E tire will be more than adequate and stop the blowout problem. I ran LTs on my 2955 for 8 years. It came originally with them. I *NEVER* had a tire problem. And all the other owners of the 29xx series that I know had LTs and no problems.

One Montana I traveled with in June blew *THREE* tires in under 50 miles. All of them were less than a year old and had rolled around 1500 miles. We all chipped in our spares until we ran out. Then the mobile tire guy showed up with four brand new tires ($$$$).

I have to agree with Carl! We have a 2980 and have run LTs on the unit since we've had it and have had only on blowout and that was because I didn't check the tires close enough before heading out and they all had age cracks in them. Luckily, we did not experience body damage on the Monte and we did get four new tires when it happened and finished the trip with no problems, well with the tires anyway!

I agree with all the above. You need some good LT tires. If you've got the right tires your problem will vanish. Last summer I had an independent suspension failure on northern Indiana's bad roads and railroad tracks and ran 90 miles on just one tire before I realized I had a problem. The remaining tire survived just fine. My rig is heavier, but I had G614's so I got away with it.

I recently bought LT235/85/R16 Bridgestone Duravis R500HD tires that Lonnie suggested. I have a 2005 2955RL. So far no problems!

I put Michelin LTX's on mine and love them. BF Goodrich Commercial TA's are another choice.

Do not get discouraged. As anyone reads this forum they will find tire problems are a big headache especially on the road. I remember in the late 70's and early 80's we traveled with TT's and did not have as many problems.

This forum has been a great source of info on tires for me. We have a 09 2980RL and have determined through weighing individual wheel weights LT tires will be our tire choice. With proper care and maintenance on my part these tires will serve us well and w/o problems. I intend to purchase a tire monitoring system so I can have instant tire info. Relying on a good Samaritan waving their arms to say "Tire Blowout" is not my idea of tire monitoring.

What kind of tires were they?
We have a 3075RL (similar in size/weight to the 2955RL) and have had Michelin XPS Ribs for over 14,000 miles. Still look nearly new and never a problem. They only lose maybe 2-4 lbs of air over a season. Temps, according to TPMS, run only a few degrees above ambient air temps.

When we are traveling more than just close (300 miles or so) we carry two spares. One is under the 5er in the stock position and I carry the other in the bed of the truck. It lies flat in front of the hitch. So far have never need the second spare but in as much as we kept one of the China Bombs when we went to G614s it seems like cheap insurance.

We have a 2955 and we put Duravis 250's on Lonnie's recommendation. We are very happy with them and feel very safe now.

I took the OEM Goodyear Marathon tires off and installed Bridgestone Duravis 250 tires @ 800 miles.

The original Marathon tires weigh 37lbs. The Duravis 250 is a all steel tire and weighs 59lbs.

To me, having a tire with 22lbs more material in it has to make it a stronger tire.

Just get rid of the made in China stuff, you will not need 2 spares.

Always run quality LT tires, never yet had to use my spare with good tires

We got caught in Ohio with a blowout and Good Sam ERS spent hours on the phone trying to find a ST 80 tire and never did find one. We now run LT tires (with monitors) as you can alwsys find one of those. Especially on weekends. Some even have the same tires on their trucks so they have that spare also. That would be your 2 spares if needed. we now cannot do that asa our 2013 GMC 3500 runs 18" tires on it.

This is the inside of a TowMax tire with 3,000 miles on it. You would have never noticed it until it was too late.

My friend was removing them after having a blowout and put on LT tires.

PLS TAKE THE CHINA JUNK TIRES OFF............

We have always carried 2 spares even though we run 14 ply, after traveling with horses and a living quarters trailer for years going down many gravel/dirt roads, you never know what your going to pick up, I guess I am overly prepared with all the tools etc. we have on board. Both spares go on the back of the truck just behind the headache rack...

I agree the LT tires would work fine for your rig.
