What size should I buy for 2nd Air Con??
I have to take my new 2014 38' Mountaineer in for repair on my air conditioner and I thought I might just bite the bullet and have them install the 2nd in the bedroom. What size should I put up there, and I'm quessing around a Grand with labor at Tacoma RV in Wa State. Am I close??

I should add that Tacoma RV told me on delivery day that the Fiver is pre-wired for a second AC. Is a $1000 a good guess???

I think that or less, but I'm not familar with your area. I'd get the 15.5 (it's what we have). Not much more in price and if you end up somewhere hot you'll be happy you did.

I had a 13.5k low profile added for just about $1,000, also prewired. Most of the time we just use it to cool down the trailer after a hot day of driving. But in really hot locations we sometimes run it during the day and turn it off at night as the rear cools well enough alone at night.

Some great points made. Since I'm 6yrs away from full timing and still dealing with Wa. State Parks that are half with 30/50amps, I think I'm wise to hold off on the 2nd unit until retirement and we travel the US.

Dont forget jaybird that even on 30 amp, you can still run one or the other A/C units. On my old 3400RL I used to run the bedroom a/c during the day and then at night I'd switch and run the living room. Made it easier to hear conversation and the TV in the living room during the day by not having the a/c unit over head running full blast. Just a thought...

15k, doesn't cost that much more and you will never be sorry you went with the larger unit.

I don't know, Gents? I have a 13.5 in our bed room of the not-so-well insulated old Challenger. I've had it running while taking a shower and dang near had ice hanging off things it shouldn't be hanging off of, if you know what I mean! But, jaybird, if a 15 is not that much more in cost......do it.

A 13K ac in the bedroom is plenty big. Because the area is so small it will cool quicker and cooler than our 15K unit in the living area. In fact we use a floor fan to pump air from the bedroom to the living area when we're in a hot climate.
But I would recommend you ALWAYS get a second ac on units as big as ours. I have friends who don't, and they're continually complaining about the heat in their bedroom.

We had the 13.5 in the bedroom area the 06 3400. In the 06 both were noisy and we ran the bedroom A/C when we did not want the noise in the back. The new units are much more quiet, Don't forget that cold air sinks so the 15.5 in the bedroom will under normal not blazing hot conditions cool the back area as swell.

Had a 15k installed last year for $800. Dealer claimed they had a good deal on the 15k's and could put one of them on cheaper then the 13k. Both are just as noisey, the 15k may be a couple of inches higher but it will cool quicker and if your main AC conks out then the one in the bedroom will take over and can handle the load. But if you have to run on generator not sure if it will make that much of a difference cause I don't know the electric load of each. But we have been very happy with the 15k.

I went with a 13.5 low profile front unit. We at times use our Honda 3000 generator and the 13.5 gives me an extra amp or two for other electrical loads.

The net of it is YES, get a 2nd AC. Our Mountainer has teh 13.5 in it and it between the rear 15 and the front 13.5, they keep our unit very cold. We did install the heating element in the front 13.5 and love it on a chilly morning to knock the cold off. Both of our are Dometic full size.

When we added the 2nd AC we got the larger size, the 15.5K BTU size. Your rig size is similar in overall size to ours and I would be very hesitant to put in anything with a lower rating.
