Such a shame

We had planned a day trip during the Great Lakes Rally to the White's Covered Bridge not far from the campground. It was the oldest covered bridge in Michigan and on the national historic registry. Early in the morning on Saturday some kids (thought anyways) torched the bridge and now its laying in the bottom of the river, below. This is just such an absolute waste. How can anyone take such a beautiful structure and historical piece and destroy it? The bridge had special meaning to me, as my Great Grand Fathers original Michigan Homestead was at the top of the hill, going down to the bridge, and I spent many-many hours on the banks next to the bridge, playing tag across the bridge, and fishing under it, as a youngster, and even took my new Bride there when we were dating a couple years ago. I really can't believe its gone.

The world would be a much better place without some folks in it.

All does not have to be lost, depending on the energy and resolve of people who may be inspired enough to see the bridge restored. We had a similar occurrence in West Virginia, where an accident resulted in a Civil War era covered bridge that had been in existence for well over a hundred years. For inspiration, here is a brief summary article:

Philippi Covered Bridge Restoration

Hope it works out for all!

Sounds like a recent story I saw on TV where a bunch of kids in several vehicles knocked down dozens of mail boxes (the kind on posts near the street) in some neighborhood. Someone actually caught video of a kid jumping out of one of the cars and using several leg kicks to get the mail box to fall down. I hope they catch them and throw the book at them. Too bad these stories on the news gives other neighbor kids ideas on how to vandalize and add their mischievousness.

Unfortunately, more times than not, their parents are fine upstanding people, but are too protective of their rotten offspring. I hope they are as tough and remorseful. My kids always knew that if they participated in crap like this, they were gonna have to repay in every way they had to and not get much sympathy from us. Tough love works. But for some, jail works, then we can all pay for their "reform" with our tax dollars. Just can't win.
