Speaker behind fireplace

Just had our fireplace worked on and when it was out noticed a large speaker setting behind it with wires running upward. Turned on tv with and without dvd player but didn't notice anything coming through. Anybody know where this is connected and what it is? Thanks

Base woofer for surround sound. Only works when using DVD player.

You should also hear something out of it using the tuner (unless they never hooked up an antenna to it as I found on ours).

yeah that surprised me too that the subwoofer was behind there, I was going to put it somewhere else but could not find a place for it SOOOO back it went, veah I tried EVERYTHING to get Surround to my TV not just the DVD, I can only get the TV to go partly on Surround (just the 3 speakers between the TV and DVD) it won't go to the back speakers

On the remote for the Samsung stereo is a button labeled "DOPL II" (just under the "7" key). Press it and watch the display on the Stereo. When it says "Matrix" stop, That is the setting for surround sound including the rear speakers.

For the Sony, you have do do the "Quick Setup" and attach the external mic to set up the surround sound. Set the mic up closer to the tv so it pushes more from the back speakers. I set mine up this weekend and it sounds great. Didn't know about the sub so I may have to go redo it.
