elect water heater

I am having trouble getting my hot water heater to work on electric. I have a 2005 2955RL. I have a switch outside at the bottom of the water heater, although I am unable to turn it on. The switch does not want to move when I push it. Does anyone have any info or expertise on if I am doing something wrong or any help? Thanks in advance for all those MOC members that help out.

Russ

Hi Russ,

The small black switch must be on for the 120v heater to work. If it is stuck, turn off the 120vac ckt breaker for the heater. Spray it in the crack around the rocker part with a light oil like PB Blaster, maybe WD-40 and see if it will free up.

If not, pry it out of the hole, you can probably get one at Radio Shack, must be 120vac/15a rated. If not your local RV Dealer can get you one. You will probably break/destroy the switch, but it is bad anyway.

If you can not get a switch, just connect the wires on the switch together and if the element is OK, the thermostat is not tripped, you have 120vac to the heater, it should heat.

switch is frozen. they are not good at all. They are easy to find. I did a search for them when I replaced my first one and found it. Also OZZ should have one in his catalog. Check with him.
I finally removed mine last year and put a switch inside where it is a lot more available to get to

One thing to look at before you do a lot of work is if something is caught in the hole on the switch. Those little black switches came from the factory with a tiny keeper thru them. If it broke off and the keeper shaft is still in the hole the switch wouldn't function. Stick a needle thru the hole and see if it's open.

As indicated, the switch quality leaves something to be desired, and many folks simply hardwire the back of the switch, and then turn the heater on and off from inside. In my case, a weeping relief valve created too much moisture.

Replaced the switch today, found it at a hardware store. It was an easy fix. We now have hot water via the campground power that we already paid for. Thanks to all for your help. I can't wait until I am knowledgeable enough to help others out.
