We got the job!

Next winter we'll be working at the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife folks. It's located north of Yuma. That should allow us to visit the circle at Quartzite and we'll be able to drop by and see folks camping at the dam area below us. Since we'll be living there we won't have the flat tire and have to work in Eastern Arizona the next day issues that kept us from visiting those who were camping there this year. These folks want the best work campers they can get so they start looking early. If it sounds like something that would interest you, they are currently advertising at Volunteer.gov. They offer full hookups, a shower building with a full kitchen and freezer space and warm weather. They expect you to work 24 hours per week (three days on four days off) in the visitor center or doing minor maintenance work and/or possibly public relations and school visits in Yuma. If your just in the area they have a wonderful visitors center and you can view a variety of migratory birds and other wildlife.

Congratulations on getting the job! Sounds pretty good, plus work 3 off 4 is even better. Gives you time to do what you want too.

That sounds worth a flat tire. Glad you got it and understand not making it out here.

I think I will go to the web site you listed. DW and I are interested. Her background is nursing and I am retired from the welding and pipefitting trades. I have a bit of teaching experiance. I taught safety and first aid to apprentices for a number of years. I still teach OSHA & MSHA.

Well we did it. DW and I both applied at Glen Canyon National Recreation Center. We now wait to see if anything comes of it.

Thanks to all! It's always nice when you know where you'll be six months or more in advance. Good luck Shovelhead, hope it all falls in place for you.

That's great you secured a winter job already! We secured our current gig (in Sarasota Florida at Sun-n-Fun RV Resort) last May! Gotta always get the jobs in the warm places during winter early, that's for sure! Enjoy the gig and let us know how it goes!

We are looking for something in that area too next winter. Betsy is not at all happy with the weather in Vegas. Since we will be doing Wagon Master duty for Q next winter we need to find something down that way.

Dick, is it 120 miles to Yuma from there? Where is the closest store?
I might be interested in a winter deal.

I looked it up, I guess it is around 50 miles. Closer than we are to town, if fuel keeps going up, none of us will be able to go to town..

That's correct, it's about 45-50 miles north of Yuma off of Hwy 95, and I discovered that GPS's can't find it and MapQuest can only come about 4 miles from it but by then the signs tell you were to go. The folks at the refuge do realize the issues and have a full kitchen and freezer space for the volunteers so the trips to town can be minimized and the place MapQuest wants to take you to is actually a small lake and "resort" area so there is a little convenience store and a nice looking bar and grill about four miles away. The other side of the coin is that's it's only a couple of hours to San Diego and with four days off at a time road trips are a possibility and affordable with the money your not paying for lot rent and electric. Should have also mentioned that like most of these places they also provide showers and laundry facilities.
