Wonder if you can buy those "wheel locks" you see used in some places by the police??? Seems they might make things difficult for the "flatbed" scam.

I wasn't trying to minimize the victims loss at all. Nor was I trying to trivalize it. I was just stating it can happen anywhere at anytime and all we can do is be as safe as possible. Doing what you can is all we can do. But that sometimes is not enough.

I was more trying to state that it happens everywhere, not just in the RGV.

Back when-----The company I worked for did a fair amount of work in the RGV. HEB food stores was one of our customers, when arriving to work at one of the stores, I would contact the store manager and then stay with my service truck until the security guards arrived to stay by my truck until my work was done, no matter how long I was there. This was more than ten years ago. I guess things don't change much. Oh- and yes, my service truck was a 1 ton, four door, diesel Ford truck.

Here are some statistics on auto thefts from the Insurance Information Institute. I couldn't find the same for just trucks

In 2009 the South accounted for the largest share of thefts—37.8 percent, followed by the West, 34.2 percent. The Midwest accounted for 18.0 percent of thefts and the Northeast for 10.0 percent.

Any idea what percentage of those vehicles were trucks?

I just wanted to get the original post out about the RGV and the people from other parts of the country who are easy picking for the drug runners and coyotes for free trucks,with their out of state plates. I know cars and trucks get stolen all over the country.

Wow! I'm gonna have to move! From the chart I see that the San Joaquin Valley has several cities with very high stolen vehicle rates. .... 2,3,4,5 and 8 in the top 10! I knew we had a problem but seeing all those cities in print makes me nervous!

Mossberg makes a great "anti theft device", trouble is you must sleep in your vehicle to make it effective.... What's a guy to do!!!

One Policeman here told me that if you are in a parking lot at a mall drive into a spot that has a curb crank the wheels all the way to the left or right, put on the club and lock your vehicle even if you have an alarm. Some thieves use tow trucks and if the wheels are turned they can't tow it if they can't hook up to the front end.

Trucks get stolen every day, every hour. They been taken right out of the driveway while you were at home. At the local store while you were inside. If they want the truck they will get it no matter where you are. We keep a list of everything in the truck and keep nothing of great value or that is uninsured in it. If it is taken it will be a great inconvenience but it is fully insured and It will be replaced. Alarm systems are of little value to a experienced thief. The club is a marketing joke and can be removed in the time I wrote about it.

The oldest "club buster" is a hack saw. There is only a small steel ring inside the plastic of a steering wheel. Cut near the club, then just slip the club through the gap. Steering wheels can be had real cheap at junk yards.

Well, I just got my 'Jimmi Jammer' I only got one, for the drivers door, that seems the most broken into. I will install it and put the stickers on the window, maybe they will go to the next truck down the line.
You actually need one for each of the doors, this will prevent a screwdriver break-in. I will probably install a current-sensing alarm, might help a little, but that will be the extent of my 'Theft-proofing' as the new Ford keys have the Micro-chip in them.

That is Rio Grande Valley. typically we refer that area in South Texas, McCallen, Harlengen, but there is a Rio Grande valley that runs along the Rio Grande River in New Mexico.
