We used to drive 350-400 miles a day. About 9 hours with stops. We were only in our 60's then tho! LOL Now I aim for around 250-300 most days. Once in a while where we have to be somewhere 1000 miles away, I will drive 350-400 again; but prefer not.

250 a day is the goal but we will do 300 reluctantly when we have to. We try to not be in a hurry.

On our way back from AZ this year we did about 340 miles our first day but the balance was about 225-250 miles a day. We take our time and if we feel we can drive some extra miles we go ahead and drive a few miles on down the road. We normally will not make reservations unless we definitely want to stay at a specific campground for the night and we make them then for that campground. There have been several time where we've only driven 150 miles because we wanted to stop along the way and "smell the roses" so to say. We don't have a time schedule in most cases so we take our time.

When driving from MD to MI to see the grandparents we will leave at 5am to miss DC traffic and drive the whole 522 miles. Last year on our trip to Yellowstone we drove around 400 miles a day on the way out but then took days to get back and never drove more than 250

We are both retired and not in a hurry to get anywhere. When on the road we normally will get rolling by 9:30 10AM and be in a Campground by 5 or 6 PM. We make fuel stops and food stops. We normally do under 300 miles per day some times way less.

The reason I ask

I’m asking because on May 14th, this year, we left Sunny Florida for home in New York State. Its about a 1200 mile trip. The first day was about 400 mile.
The second day was about 350 which left the remaining miles on the third day. Needless to say, the last day was a long one for me, being the only drive.
Speed is alway a factor. I try to stay 3 miles under the speed limit when possible. Som time I’ll need to let the Cummins run on the down hill just to stay at a reasonable speed to climb the next hill.
Anyone have any suggestions on speed.
I gross out about 28,000lbs.

Jester,

Just like distance to drive you will get different answers as to speed. I typically stay 5 mph below the speed limit so as not to slow traffic or get run over. We go to Utah every summer with 80 mph limit on the interstate - we don't spend much time on the interstate and drive the two lane highways with slower limits. A good speed for mileage and comfort is 60-65.

As to distance/time to travel 5 hours or 300 miles is fairly typical for us although we sometime do more or less.

What speed are your tires rated for?

The majority of the time I’m pulling my camper I’m headed to a job site for work. I’ll drive 10-12 hours. If I’m headed back home I will cut that back some.8-10 hours. As to speed, the tires on my tt as well as the factory tires on my MHC were rated for 65 mph. So I always drove 69-65 sometimes a bit faster but not for more than a few miles. I now have 14 ply tires on the MHC and rated to I believe 75 MPH. The only pulling I’ve done with those is through town from the tire store to the storage lot so, 30 mph at best. Out on the highway I will boost my speed some but, most likely not more than 70.

We used to do 9-11 hours and 500-600 miles per day on some days when still working and trying to maximize time off. But now try to stay under 6 hours. Easier to stretch out the time when retired. 11 hours driving is tiring, even when DW and I trade out driving time.

I typically run the posted limit up to 70 mph.

We are retired and in no hurry so we usually only travel about 180 to 220 miles and then stay at least two days. We stay a week to 10 days near any major city to sightsee. The truck only has a 32 gallon diesel tank and I prefer to fuel it unhitched so the mileage is limited. I set the cruise control for 65 on freeways and 60 on US Highways.

We try to travel for 6 months in the summer and spend winter near San Antonio. We visited family east of the Mississippi the last two summers and planned a 6 month "Grand Tour of the West" this year. That has been postponed until next year with the virus and closings everywhere. If the virus does not spike and close everything again, we may do a two month trip up to Denver and back late summer or early fall. I am going a bit stir crazy but since we high risk to get severely sick if we catch it, it is better to stay at home.

With the size of our Monty, I always make sure I have reservations nine to 12 months ahead of time. I have been told by some RV parks that they are full three months early.

Sailuns ARE Speed rated L or 75 MPH. I verified.

My speed is 65 -70 with it usually at 67. Faster I am just pushing too much wind and slower I feel I am a hazard

For me it depends on who I’m with. When I’m with my wife 4 to 500 miles and when I’m with the guys in the shop, from western Va the Laramie Wy in under 48 hours. That is over 1700 miles. We are hunting or fishing and they are in a hurry.

It is for you to figure out; it just depends on where you're going and how quickly you want to get there. Using google map will give you a pretty good idea on miles/time.

Our rule is 5 hours=250 miles/ 10 hours=500 miles

Speed - depends on what kind of road and where we are - Interstates - 65/68. Regular state highway - whatever but usually below the speed limit which tends to upset the non towing drivers, especially across Northern New England. Today - it will only be I-87 headed to Lake Champlain and a day later then originally planned (I HATE setting up in the rain if I don't need to (it rained yesterday)

Distance - this is one that makes me chuckle. That distance is whatever it is from point A to point B. Whenever I see this question, it always makes me wonder what people are doing with their RVs. A Cannon Ball run? Or are they on vacation, trying to see the sights? How many days in a row do you actually travel 4-500 miles, 10-12 hours. Sure, we have done it, but when I lay out a trip it is based on 300-350 and sometimes a bit more, often less.

No more than 8.5 hours which gets me from Md. to Myrtle Beach. Towing is work. I am only 55 and get tired after that long. If time allows I even cut that in half and stop half way.

Usually no more than 8 hours per day. Though I did tow from Sacramento CA to Granbury TX in 2 1/2 days. Wasn’t fun but the job insisted I started quickly.
