Fluke Multimeter

I did a search and didn't find much on the subject. So I've never owned a DVM but ordered a Fluke 117 for general electrical and RV troubleshooting this afternoon. Seems to be a quality test instrument just like my Fluke 62 Max IR gun. Just hope I ordered the right model for my purposes.

Fluke meters are great instruments for precision measurements. But for general electrical work a $20 dvm will be more than adequate.

Probably overkill but it will do the job.

As others said probably overkill depending on which model and expensive but what the heck. It is nice to be able to read amperage draw when you need to. Quality tools are always nice to own.
Happy and safe roads to you.

As others have stated Fluke makes excellent products but a Harbour Freight unit would have been sufficient for use around the Montana. If planning to use earning a living Fluke is excellent.

I ended up with a bit of overkill since I wanted to be able to check a/c and d/c amps. Fluke 365 Detachable Jaw True-RMS AC/DC Clamp Meter

I have a fluke 23 meter that I bought about 30 years ago and it still works like it did when it was new. Nothing wrong with good quality tools that last.

or a $5 Harbor Freight one. I got a couple of them for free when you buy other stuff promotions and they've been working for several years.

Yeah. I actually have 4 of those free ones; 1 in the trailer, 1 in the truck, and 2 in the house. That’s about all I ever use even though I have a little higher priced meter also.

I, a retired electrician have several of the "free ones" from HF. The only weakness when using these for RV use is the supplied leads. There are aftermarket leads available. A 12 v test light is adaquet for most 12 volt needs. Also, I prefer analog meters as they give a quicker indication. Digital is great when accurate readings are needed.

I have a Fluke my employer supplied many years ago. When I retired, I got to keep all my tools and the Fluke is still going strong. I don't keep it in the camper though. I have a $5 HF for that and just leave it in the rig.

@ Trvlyr’s

You bought a great meter - will serve you well for years. Check out RVElectricity on facebook - Mike Sokol. He has a series on using VOM’s.

Be safe with electricity Good luck!

I also prefer analog meters. I have a digital also, but can't use it without searching the internet to see what the symbol for ACV or DCV is.
