Latest Brainstorm - Sink and Cooktop Cover Storage

In the tradition of planned mods for the new rig and since we will now be graduating from two Corian covers for the sink (3750) to four Corian covers including the cooktop (3850), a need is apparent for a place to store these four covers. I will need to measure the sink cabinets to make sure the solution I have in mind will work, but I had a brainstorm. In addition, while I think of it, in our 3400, I had installed a sliding garbage can beneath the L counter in the kitchen and it was sorely missed in the 3750. There are three cabinet doors beneath the sink counter in the 3850 and DW has already agreed that one of them (far right one close to the fridge) will be dedicated to a double garbage can sliding rack. I am now considering a similar sliding drawer with dividers for the sink and stovetop cover storage. Curious as to whether any MOCers have installed anything along these lines. Here is what we are looking at for the covers and any thoughts, pro or con as always are solicited:

Well of course Jim!! Gotta install the EMS and generator auto-start from the 3750 first so it will be usable for the only trip (hopefully) this year. After that, I have all winter to piddle around! For the time being, I can only put together my list of what I want to do, while the agonizing wait drags on and on!!

Showed the brainstorm to DW this evening and she is impressed and agrees that it will be exactly what we need to allow for storage of the cooktop and sink Corian covers. The drawer shown is 21 3/4" deep, has four vertical sections and the divider panels between the sections graduate to 10" deep at the back of the drawer. I believe it will fit the bill but will have to doublecheck measurements of the covers. Discussed with her the cabinet to be used (beneath the sink) and the fact that I will have to construct a frame for it due to the manufactured cabinet characteristics. Now I can go on to thinking about the next mod!!

Dick, we are usually limited to summer rallies due to work and school schedule. Youngest is still in high school and DW teaches elementary school. Maybe in a few years it may be possible, until then forum pictures and one or two regional rally show and tells will have to suffice!

There is no way my wife is going to let me put something like that in her cabinet. The 3150RL only has one space under the sink and it has the trash can, and on the back side has some cleaning supplies and her 6qt crock pot with some stuff stacked on top of it.

She puts the 2 covers for the stove, which are almost always off, behind the couch. The 2 sink covers, the large one is always off (behind the couch) and the small one is off just long enough to wash dishes. It just finds a temp home as needed.

Good idea on that point thing.........

Who says you "can't take it with you"? That trailer is gonna be as good as your stickhouse, that you can take with you wherever you go. Yeah, I know the phrase is for "something else", but I think it works pretty good here.

jlb27537, sorry to hear you don't have the space, but in our old rig I found we have the space. So far, we just lean the covers inside there, and I really should do something similar to what Bingo is gonna do.

The inside storage space was another factor that sold us on the 3850FL. The storage area under the sink is huge, and has three separate doors that open into the large space. I understand about limited room beneath the sink, since the 3750FL likewise only had room for the garbage can and very little else. I would estimate that the kitchen storage in the ordered rig will double what we currently have.

I've a 3150 and made 2 of these for under the sink which was originally just open unorganized wasted space. We keep the trash can under the countertop extension until we travel.

Thanks Dieselguy, I now have another viable alternative. DW will be happy with anything that gets the covers out of sight and easily accessible. What you did looks great and may well lead me to rethink the way I was looking at it. Did you line the dividers with anything to prevent scratching the Corian or do the wood dividers not scratch the Corian. I was considering a felt or similar lining on the pull-out version I am looking at.

I stand my sink covers behind the stove top on the counter. Looks like a backsplash and helps protect the under counter wall, then when I want to cover sinks, they are right there and don't take up any of my cabinet space. I would probably keep the stove ones on until I needed to use the cooktop. I do have plenty of cabinet space in my 358 rlt Mountaineer and stand my trays and cookie sheets up on end also under the pull out cabinet. It's fun to see what others do with their "stuff".'

I put a piano hinge on the piece under the Fridge and store baking pans and wok there and is still room for the counter tops in my 3400.

Bingo ... I made the dividers out of plywood ... it doesn't seem to do any damage to the tops. I did line the bottoms of the divider slots with anti-slip material ... it keeps the other stuff in place while traveling down the road. The divider I made for behind the other set of double doors has a box on one end instead of shelves where the toaster and can opener sits on the one shown. We put cleaners and other spray bottles in it. It keeps them from roaming around under there while traveling. We still have enough room on the sink side to put a bag of potatoes and the trash can if needed.

Nice! Will have to leave the ultimate decision up to the boss, at least we have some alternatives. Carole is exactly right, there are many times that the wheel does not have to be re-invented. With all the knowledge, expertise and experience on the MOC, the odds are usually in your favor that someone has "been there and done that!"

In our 3150RL, we put the sink covers in the storage area under the mattress. We don't use them anyway. My fishing poles go there as well. That's one place where they won't get damaged.
