Goodyear Marathon Load Range "E"

Went to the Goodyear warehouse this morning to discuss the G614RST LR "G" tire, this particular tire is very heavy duty...maybe too heavy. The mgr I spoke with informed me of the new Marathon LR "E" Goodyear is making in ST 235/80R 16E and went over the spec's with me.Appears to be a good HD trailer tire.Anyone had any experience with the "E" rated Marathon.

I had Marathons LR "D" on our old travel trailer and went through 8 in 8.5 years, four were 100% warranty due to the fact they were LR "C" from the factory.I've been reading all the tire post on the forum recently and see Cooper also has a good trailer tire. The Goodyears are made in China however.Any thoughts or comments are all welcome.

Thanks,
Philip

Philip, After having the Chinese made Missions, and, reading so many comments about Chinese tires, I will not have another set. I now have Japanese tires from Les Schwab. Lucky me??? Moving on up......

I don't have anything bad to say about Goodyear or Cooper but knowing the difficulty that can be found in replacing the "ST" tires I will be putting "LT"s on next.
There are way too many tire shops that do not carry "ST"s in inventory and have to order them which can take a week or more. When on the road I don't have a week or more time to just hang around waiting. Most any tire store does inventory "LT"s and I can be back on the road in an hour or so.

Agree with Glenn 100% on the ST/LT thing..My Coopers are LT for the reasons Glenn states..better tire and since we travel all over, a brand that is readily available. If we travel a lot availability is something we need to think about..Example.... Helen and I switched to Lenscrafters for our eyecare because they are everywhere while our long time friend and eyecare provider is local..can't help us much in Az, Tx, Fla

Thanks for the replies and advice,I'm interested in the Coopers & will take a look at them tomorrow.Being able to get a replacement tire when you need it is definitely high on my list.

With all the Chinese lead-based paint in the news, their tires probably have lead belts rather than steel ones !!

We also went with LTs when we had our Montana. We installed BF Goodrich Commercials E range and got good service out of them. SAMs, BJs, and COSCOs carry them at a discount.

We went to the local Camping World today and toured all their Montanas. They have almost the full line up in stock, Big Sky, Montana and Mountaineer. What I noticed was that some to the new models have Goodyear Marathon tires. 16" 235/85ST load range E. That was the good news, what disappointed me was that these Goodyears sported (in very fine print) a "Made in China" label. I am not sure if the Goodyear name will mean anything in terms of quality. There have been a lot of problems with brand name products that were made in China.

Anyway, the Montana's all looked nice, but we still have not seen anything to make us trade our '05 3670RL.

I, for one, will never ever have another Goodyear Marathon on any trailer I own. I have blown so many of those tires I never managed to wear out a single tire's tread. I finally dumped them all and never looked back. I suppose others have good luck with them but I've had them on three fifthwheels and blew at least a dozen tires. Never again for me.

Steve,

I knew you had trouble with tires but no idea that you had blown out so many! That could cause a lot of damage to your rig. Did you ever encounter that problem? If so did GoodYear cover the damage repair.

Not wanting to upgrade to 16" wheels, I just put a set of Carlisle (GASP) 225/75R 15, load range E tires on my TT. The original Duro's had tread separation on 3 of the 4 tires (load D).

I checked all over Hell and Creation and could NOT find a 15" trailer tire that was made anywhere but China. Wish me luck.

HamRad, believe it or not we never had any ancillary damage, knock on wood. Goodyear covered a couple of them but on the others they claimed I must have been overweight or hit something. These were dealers. I never sent anything to the factory. Usually there was too little tire left on the rim. I am careful about tire pressure, too. Knock again on wood, the Mission tires that are OEM on this 3400 have 13,000+ miles and have been flawless although I have one wearing on the inside tread. I may have to find an axle alignment shop to fix that.

I just had a set of Bridgestone Duravis R500 HD tires installed on our rig. I was impressed with the overall sturdiness of the sidewalls on these tires as compared to those of some of the others. Figured that with our fifth wheel causing tires/wheels to twist when turning sharply and parking that these tires would give us very good service.

I have Tacoma Trail AWT LT 235/85R16 on the trailer since I puchased in 2004. It has been a good tire so far with lots of miles.
