Lightning & Thunder
Hey All,
We just got into a nasty thunder and lightning storm. We have never seen a tree hit before, well we did 5 minutes ago. Now it's on fire and smoking really good. I never seen my dog jump that high before, now they are trying to get under thing's. Man, mother nature at her best......Now some people are out in it walking around with umbrella's

We have had trees get hit on the farm. You will see a streak down the tree then it starts dying. We had one poplar tree get hit so hard post size parts were thrown a hundred feet from the tree. That takes a lot of power.

Had a pine tree in front of my mom and dads house get hit once. I don't know if it was the concussion or my reaction that blew me back inside the front door LOL. It was at least 2' in diameter tree. It had a large long split and when we cut it down that winter the crack was filled with all sorts of wasps!!! I guess that is the way they winter.

When we lived on the water we had a 30' cottonwood hit hard. The sap turned to steam and the tree exploded. Parts flew across the yard, on the house and some even landed in the street on the other side of the front yard.

We fish on a small lake 2500 acres. A few years ago there was a thunderstorm and a couple days later people at one of the camp grounds noticed a boat had been at an island for a couple days. They went over to investigate and found a family of 5, mom dad and 3 children all dead under a pine tree. I guess they had sought refuge on the little island, tragic decision.

Thunder storms are awesome, but now they make me sad. We had a dog that was scared of thunder. He truely was my best friend and the most loyal and lovable dog I've ever had or encountered before. He died about 3 months ago. Whenever I hear thunder and see lightning now, I'm not afraid or even amazed any more, I start crying out of grief for the dog. It's silly I know, but I can't help it now.

Had a pug and a golden retriever. Every time we had thunder they would both climb in my lap.

We are so sorry for the lost of your fur baby. I have had to go thru that a few times with all of the dog's I have had thru the year's. If you want to know what pure love is. Just look at your dog, that is pure love right there beside you. I rescued a basset hound when I was 9 years old. I had Barney for 21 year's. He was in our wedding party, He carried Sofia's ring and her dog (Basset) Buggy carried my ring. When I lost Barney I stayed home for a few day's. Even that he went to Rainbow Ridge 35 years ago, There is not one day that goes by that I don't think of him. So all I am trying to say it is not silly to mourn for you fur baby.....

We have 2 bully dog's and they never had a reaction to loud noise's. Last night one did. Bingo ran up and jumped into my arm's and he was looking at me like let's get the hell out of here. Then when they were in they went under the dinette table. but with in 10 minutes they were back looking for food and going to what they do best, Sleep.....

We once had lightning hit a young pine tree in our backyard. It was about 5" diameter. It just exploded into thousands of pieces, nothing larger than a football. Left me amazed at the power of nature.

A few years we were at our mountain vacation home. It sits at the top of a ridge in the Rockies. The house is at 9000ft. and it drops down to 4000 in the valley below. It's a weather maker.
We were having a shower, heavy cloud cover with thunder and lightning - seemingly rather distant. I was just "piddling" around on the side of the mountain and zzzzz BOOM! Big blue flash is all I saw but it went straight down a pine tree about 40-50' from me sending tree parts everywhere. Split it right down the middle and top half of an 80' pine just sort of toppled over minus a lot of wood. Hurried inside and told DW "you know that thing where they say if you even hear thunder you should look for cover? Well, they're right!"

When I was a kid we had a big front porch. When we had a summer storm our father would go set on the porch and enjoy it. We could watch sheets of rain meander across our hay field and the lightning light up the sky. We watched it rain on one side of the field and slowly ease over to where we were. To this day I still enjoy a beautiful thunderstorm.

Interesting discussion by our local weather guy a week or so ago. Lightning records were recently announced.
Longest lightning flash in terms of length was 440 miles.
Longest single lightning flash in terms of duration was almost 17 seconds.
All I can say is WOW! Love to watch a good lightning storm.

We went and got $1500.00 of fireworks for the 4th of July. Had a bad thunder and lighting with pitch fork rain and it ruined 2/3rd of the fireworks. Thank you mother nature...
