5th Wheel Hitch

First off, I appreciate and enjoyed reading all the different opinions on trucks used to pull 5th wheels. So for my next question for opinions and info. The 2023 Montana 3793RD that we just purchased is equipped with Lippert Road Armor Trail Air pin-box. Our current 2005 F350 tow vehicle has a CURT Q20 5th wheel hitch. We are upgrading to a 2023 model truck. The CURT will be staying in the old truck. What are some good options for a 5th wheel hitch to match the pin box on our new Montana?

Welcome to the forum. You might as well ask which truck is better (the answer is, the one you own). You are going to get many opinions, but most of us only have experience with a couple hitches.

Any 5th wheel hitch will work with your pin box. Your new truck will probably be equipped with the puck system, so whatever hitch you get will drop right in. I suggest you go big, 20k or 25k (no reason not to) and stick with a major brand. B&W, Curt, Reese, etc.

The only experience I can share with you is that I have always used B&W hitches, never had a problem, never had a reason to look at anything else.

I also have a B&W. It’s a great hitch but they all are. Take a serious look at what your dealer sells. Since you are buying a camper from them you might get a better deal.

I can’t speak to B&W or Curt. I did have Reese hitch in the early 2000s. Fortunately my 6’-3” 250 lbs youngest son was still living at home and could assist with loading and unloading it…it felt like a battleship anchor. For our current RV my main goal was to find something I could handle by myself. I chose the Demco Recon. It breaks down into manageable parts and has served us well.

Edit: my Demco is mounted on old-school rails.

They are all heavy. The B&W breaks down into two pieces, but I still won't try to lift it by myself; already have an ortho guy on speed dial. I use the Montana to pick it up out of the truck and I store it attached to the pin box if I need my truck bed for something.

B&W is a very popular hitch. But many are happy with the other major brands. Some like the ball mount type (not gooseneck). For the first 5 years I towed with a Pullrite Super 5th. After trading for a new truck I got a Reese Elite. Both great hitches. Both separated into two parts for easier removal. Any will work well.

I have had three B&W hitches, hand down one of the best for the truck I have now have the puck system I'm 69 years old and I can take it out by myself in two part of course.

Always a B&W man, but recently made the switch to Reese Goosebox. I'll never use anything else. Ball might weigh all of 6 or 7 pounds.

Both GM and Ford trucks have the 10 speed transmissions which you will love!. Order your truck with the factory puck system for sure. Then replace the Lippert trail air pin box on your Montana 3793RD with the Reese goose box system. What you’ll have is a clean unobstructed truck bed every time the camper is disconnected. No bulky 5th wheel hitch to install, remove and store. The new 2023 F-350 will ride every bit as nice unloaded as a less capable F-250. If you are considering a dually truck, test drive a F-450. The turning radius is better than the F-250 by 15’. FWIW, Your 2005 F-350 (if it has the 6.0 liter diesel) is not very reliable for pulling that trailer.

This is a spot on recommendation!

I have the Demco Recon on an Reese base and connect it via the factory pucks. The frame connects with cams and the rest connects with hitch pins and a main pin so no bolts. I use pad locks and locking hitch pins to make it a little harder to steal. Breaks down into 3, approx 50 lb sections so a little easier to remove when I need to use the bed.

The Demco also comes in model that attaches to the bed with a factory gooseneck ball instead of a frame - it tightens on the ball and truck bed. However, I saw a review where the gooseneck version can allow some movement so I opted for the frame as I have the bed coating.

I have a Demco slider. Way to heavy for me to remove. If I could have a redo, I'd have gotten a B&W companion. Much lighter and easier to remove.

Another vote here for the B&W Companion 20K. Goes together quickly, install is just drop-in if you have the puck system from GM, Ford, Ram, and the base can separate from the hitch pad (saddle) by just pulling two hitch pins. In addition, this hitch as some minor adjustments to move the hitch back a couple of inches and up or down the same.

I have a 2023 Silverado 3500 single rear wheel with the standard bed (6'9" - not the long bed) and I do not need a slider with my Montana HC 295rl - plenty of clearance to the bed rails and cab.

I love my B&W 20K, in the future I might go with the Resse Goosebox but for now this will work.

Since we didn’t have a hitch and wanted to cushion the ride we went with a Goosebox. It’s really easy to hitch up. We are still experimenting with air pressure.

You will get all kinds of opinions. I need to get my hitch out of the bed at kayak tournaments. So, I got the Pullrite 3900. No single piece weighs more than 50 lbs. I would also look at the Reese Goosebox if I needed a clean bed. The best hitch is the one that works for you.

Again, thanks to everyone for the input. We've been doing the camper hauling thing for over 25 years. Everything from a bumper pull to a gooseneck to a 5th wheel. I know what I like but I never turn down the opportunity to here someone else's thoughts and opinions. Just might learn something new!!
