2009 3400RL, Main GRAY Tank Replacement

Unfortunately our rig is in need of professional help. I have an appointment Apr 18 to drop it off at a local dealer Service Department to have the gray storage tank inspected and probably replaced. (Galley gray tank is fine.) Before I get their estimate, does anyone else have a similar experience and can relate what it cost you for the same job? Thank you in advance for your input. I'll let you know how it goes for us. Stay tuned...

If your grey tank is leaking and from a crack, you might check out this thread, https://www.montanaowners.com/forums...ad.php?t=80415
I had a crack in the bottom of our grey tank and was able to repair it, still holding seven years later, and I also added bracing which supports both the grey tank and the black tank. Much less work and expense than replacing the tank, which may not be available anymore.

Some on this forum have reported the two piece tanks only leaking when full. Seems at one time, prior to the one piece molded tanks, overfilling the gray was breaking the weld holding the top to the tank. If that is the case another solution is to not let the tank get full.

I had a gray tank replaced on the last trailer. It developed a hole in the top and leaked when nearing full. I had the dealer replace it and the cost was $3200. Way more than I thought it should have. Get the estimate, talk to the service manager not the service advisor to get info on exactly what they think they will have to do, allotted hours etc. Don't know what dealer labor rates are around you but they can push $175hr at some dealerships. A detailed estimate is what you need. Replacing it isn't THAT hard but it will require some hours.

I've replaced both my Grey and black tanks (at different times). Tank will probably cost $500-$600, maybe more these days. Probably 4 to 6 hours. I also installed bracing so tanks are properly supported.

Galley Tank

A few summers ago our galley tank had a bad leak. We removed the coroplast and insulation. We bought the tank on Ebay for a few hundred bucks. We were in the middle of a kitchen renovation and had the cabinets removed. I cut a 12"x12" square in the floor, making sure to bevel the edges of the square. I mounted the tank, marked where the drain hole was, drilled a hole. It has worked perfectly since.

Aft Galley Grey Tank on a 3000RK.
I am in the process of replacing my grey tank today.
the old tank had a crack on the bottom radius corner due to age and use
(not repairable) and also another on top.
looked like the top crack was a mfg patch that had failed.
Purchased the exact replacement tank from ICON for about $425 plus shipping. Shipping was expensive but it arrived in two days.
I estimate about 2 hours to reinstall, about 4 hours work overall.
also adding tank heaters while its open and exposed.
Cheers

Leaks near bottom of tank can be easily and solidly fixed using JB-Weld plastic bonder, some sand paper and fiberglass mesh. While doing that with the coroplast removed, poorly installed Keystone bracing which causes these stress cracks can be fixed by filling space between steel brace in middle of tanks and the tanks themselves with correct thickness of any kind of plywood glued to underside of tank with same bonder. Cracks near tops of tanks are inaccessible for this method, but simply emptying the tanks before getting filled to the top will eliminate leaking and cost nothing. One tip - try to not do too much travel with any of the tanks more than ½ full or even less. Liquids are very heavy and 5th wheels are very bouncy.

What a CIRCUS!!!

Finally got our 5th wheel home from Camping World in Chelsea, MI on Thursday May 25. I'll explain:
They had to order a new gray tank from a 3rd party supplier because Keystone doesn't carry parts that far back. However, while they were under there diagnosing the problem, they noticed that one of my leaf springs was flat/straight. I decided to have them order the parts and do that repair as well. You would think that when the parts came in they would apply both repairs together. NOPE. It seems the left hand and right hand don't talk to one another there. The tank replacement work got done and they called to let me know I could pick it up. I asked about the springs (I ordered all 4 with new u-bolts too.) and the first service guy didn't know anything about me asking for springs to be replaced. Turns out a different service guy ordered those for me and I would need to talk to him. I had to leave the 5th wheel there so as not to lose my spot in the waiting line for shop space when the parts arrived. If I had taken it home until the springs arrived, it would have been another 3 weeks for an installation appointment. Both jobs are done. Total bill for both repairs (parts and labor) was a bit over $2,800.
What a racket!

May I ask, which gray tank was replaced? The kitchen or the shower/bath sink?
How many hours for the tank replacement please? I have a 2007 3400RL that I must replace the Shower gray tank.

12 years ago we bought a used Sportsmen travel trailer. It needed a new toilet so i started that task and discovered the floor flange was cracked and broken. Should have been an easy fix but it was glued into the tank pipe. The more i worked at trying to get it out the more i tore up things. Eventually i decided the best solution was start over with a new black tank.

Believe me - the job was not rocket science. The hardest part was laying out and cutting the holes for the “incoming” and the discharge pipe…measure 18 times and cut once! Most aftermarket tanks do not come with holes already cut. If you have the tank and the pipes and sawblades ready to go - plan on it taking you most of the day/all day. Removing the tank, ordering the tank and waiting for delivery plus doing the install…seems like we did not go anywhere for 6 weeks or so until i finished.

It was the main gray tank for the shower & bathroom sink. I believe it was at least two labor hours. (I don’t have the receipt in front of me to verify.)

If a tank problem is a leak, I have had very good success with J-B Weld Plastic Bonder. It is only suitable, however, for sewer and not the fresh water tank which is a different plastic.

I used an airplane fuel tank sealant last year. I'm going to drop this tank out and replace it with the help of my mechanic neighbor. Grateful for your time.
