Steve, if you go to the two links in my original post the repair instructions are in the NHTSA web site. My understanding it is a bag of bolts. If you google Hickory Springs, they had a recall back in about 2007 for the same issue and the replacements bolts were stepped bolts, so I am guessing this will be the same.

In preparation to have this work done on our trip heading to our workamping gig at Crazy Horse Memorial in Custer, SD I call Oklahoma RV Center in Moore, OK.

They were perplexed as they have not heard of the recall yet, so they took my info and said they would contact Keystone for the recall and secure the parts. Well they called back and said that Keystone had not "officially" issued the notice yet and would do so on the next day or so and wanted to know how she knew about it (like it was a big secret). Kara at OKRVS told them that a customer told her about it.

I have promptly sent her the links to the recall from the NHSTA so she can get the actual parts ordered now in advance of our arrival at the end of April.

Keystone had better get their act together on this before someone gets injured or worse while we all wait for this to "get into the system".

I just spoke with Keystone on the phone. They looked up the recall and my VIN. She said that my VIN is within the recall range, but there is NO flag showing my Montana has been recalled.

She recommended that I take the Montana to the closest authorized dealer, have them assess the steps then call Keystone for further instructions.

So, now I am really confused.

Guess I have to take it to a dealer.

I called Keystone when this first came up and was told I wasn't included. Got Recall letter yesterday. Go figure. Not near a dealer and leaving on a trip next month. Will have to see what transpires. Letter says approx. 1 hr. for the fix.

Interesting...there is a couple of posts in this topic that are missing from last week....anyway

I received a call from the NHTSA on Thursday and they said asked if Keystone had called or sent a letter yet and I told them they had not. The gentlemen said that Keystone had issued 2 addendums to the recall already and that could be what is holding up notification.
I called Keystone back and they did finally ID our VIN in the recall and said they will be sending a letter out.
I called OK RV Center back and they found our VIN in the system and they would order the parts from Keystone when they are available which they tell them will be this week.

We are hoping to get this done on April 27th. OK RV Center sent me the fix instructions and it looks simple but with a recall I would not do this myself just for the liability aspect down the road. If you fix it you bought it and if something fails or worst someone gets hurt you would be on the hook.

Like I said, I called last week, and she told me my Montana was not on the list for recall.

Well, got a letter in the mail today, my Montana has been recalled for the steps.

Just got our recall letter from Keystone today as well. It even gives the numbers on the heads of the rivets to look for, and where they are located. Went by the dealer (Curtis trailer) and they are aware of the recall and are already getting set up to take care of the ones they know will be coming in.

I have notified North Trail RV here in Florida. They are contacting Keystone about getting the correct parts to make the repairs.

Have contacted Camping World to have steps replaced due to recall problem and in addition cracks appearing in the frame of the steps. The informed me that the extended warrenty will take care of the problem but will not pay for frieght, $175..00 to get steps to shop and then the $50.00 deductible and state sales tax. This puts my cost out of pocked at about $235.00 to fix the poor quality steps after paying for extended warrenty. WOW!!
I told the service rep to forget it and that I would fix the steps replacing the rivets and get a local shop to weld in some new frame supports.

Received a call back in approx. an hour and they can now get the steps without charging me freight, so I will have them replace the steps for the deductable and state sales tax. Some times the battle gets old but it is usually worth it in the long run.!!

I have never heard of a freight charge on a warranty item, but kind of sounds like CW. Expect at least 2 weeks for the part to arrive. Standard time for CW.

There can not be any charge for a safety recall. I just got my letter today.

Since the steps are part of the recall I suggest that you call both Keystone and the NHTSA and voice your complaint that CW is trying to charge you. First words out of my mouth will be that the cracks in the steps are more than likely due to the poor design with the rivets and that they should be replaced in their entirety at no cost to you.

File a complaint with NHTSA and they will issue it to Keystone.

No way should there be any money out of your pocket,

We got the letter last week, made an appointment with camping world and took the Monty in. They took it back and then came out and told us they have to get the parts ordered (they said it would be bolts) to fix it and will call us when they come in. What a wasted trip.... I'll have to have hubby check for cracks. Didn't know about that until treading these posts.
Sorry you were hurt Scott and Pati. Hope it wasn't serious.
