Power Maximiser

HI We moved into an RV Park that has double 30a receptacles, the owner says that if you combine the two you can get 50 amps. I have done the research Tweety's RV has a few of them. The one I am interested in, is Camco 15amps+30 amps = 45 amps. One plugs into the first 30 amp receptacle and the second on you use and adapter 30 amp to 15 amp them plug that into it. Then your 50 amp surge and then 50 amp Shore Cord. My father in law and his wife used to run an RV Park for five years and he said some of the customer used something like this and it would work for a while and burn out one of the receptacles. My question is have any of you used one of this to get the maximum amps from two 30 amps receptacles? If so did you have any problems with burn outs?? Thanks for you info.

You can also get a two 30s to a 50 adapter. This would in theory give you up to 60 amps total, 30 amps on each leg.
Only problem would be that they are probably both on the same hot leg which could cause up to 60 amps on the neutral, which normally would never carry more than 50 amps.
With 220 vac 50 amp connections the two hot legs offset each other as far as the current carried by the neutral. In fact if both legs were carrying the exact same current there woud be no current in the neutral wire at all.
But the likelyhood of you running 30 amps on both legs at the same time is probably small.
Note though that it does come with a 15/20 adapter so you could limit one side to 20 if you wanted.

It will work until you draw more than 20 amp on the leg plugged into the 15 or 20 amp circuit

From the specs on most of these 30/30amp to 50 amp units, they say will not work with GFI outlets, and most parks have 15 or 20 amp GFI outlets on the power pedestals. If the pedestal has two 30 amp outlets, the units will work. I see Camco has a 30 amp + 15 amp to 50 amp unit that also says it will not work with a GFI outlet. The problem I see is, how do you know which leg of your trailer is connected to the 30 amp outlet and which to the 15 or 20 amp outlet, and how would you switch them to make an A/C work? If the two outlets are coming off of different legs in the pedestal, they can not be added together. We have only stayed at one irrigation district owned park that had double 30 amp outlets in the pedestal, so have not seen the worth of carrying another adapter.

I've talked to the manufacture direct on these issues and both types had problems (GFI outlets and trying to sort the legs out) that kept me from wanting to deal with them.

I see I should have clarified that this pedestal has no GFI just two 30 amp sockets and as I stated the Owner says other have done it and it works fine. So sounds like it will work. What say you??

Yes, they will work fine in that case. You already know you will only have 30 amps per leg instead of 50 amps per leg, but that is much better than one 30 amps powering both legs of a 50 amp RV. I would stay away from the 15/30 to 50 amp adapter to avoid not having sufficient capacity on the smaller side.

Hi

Now I see why you checked your wiring to determine the capacity.

Someone that understand electric.

That’s a real breath of fresh air on this forum. LOL
