Routing suggestion around Chicago please

I am coming out of Northeastern Iowa (Clermont) heading to Goshen. I am planning to take I 80 East at Davenport. I am thinking about taking local 30 around Joliet / New Lenox to stay out of some of the Chicago traffic. Then take 49 north to I 80 at Valparaiso.
Any ideas, comments, suggestions.
It would probably be Thursday or Friday evening when I came through this area.

Try to avoid rush hour. Really doesn't matter up there where you are if you hit between 4 and 6 it isn't any fun.

Last time through that area a year ago, late July 2011, we used I 80 and blasted right through with few issues. I was more than shocked, as I really despise traveling through that area, as some of you may remember. We did it midday on a Sunday.

The construction at that time was minimal, first time for that in years I believe.

I would check the DOT of Illinois for construction warnings first, then judge.

As pointed out, timing is everything when traversing the Chicagoland area.

John

We just came that way on I80. It was the middle of the day and was fine. The crazy part wasn't very long. I happen to be in the correct lane and all went well.

We are here in Buchanan, MI for the next week.

See you soon.

As a retired trucker I have been both ways many times (30 & 80). IMO staying on I-80 is much better than Rt 30. On 30 you are faced with a lot of stop & go. I would stay on 80 and pick my lane and pace. More than likely will roll right through.

John: We used 90 around/through Chicago NEVER AGAIN! Do the detour to get out of traffic. RT 80 may be OK?

I80 is your best bet. As mentioned earlier try any time between 10 am & 2 pm for the least amount of traffic. We are regular travelers on that route.

I too hate going around Chicago and will almost anything to avoid it. We tried 30 several years ago and as WeBeFulltime it was stop,go,stop,go, lots of traffic and I vowed never again.

John, we always traveled that way since we lived in Frankfort on the south side and then in Wisconsin. If you can go through on Thursday you are much better off than Friday. Go through either before 4:00 or after 7:00. Two other things. If you have a GPS with traffic, use it. Second, listen to either 720 or 890 am for the road reports. That will tell you if there is anything happening. Last, if it is raining all bets are off. You can also go Highway 30, but there are lots of stop lights on that route. Safe travels and we look forward to seeing you at the rally.

We go on I80--not bad if you just stay in a middle lane and go in middle of day. We went on 30 once with the car--never again it is not the best part of town and there must be 100 stop lights the other thing you an do is drop down south from 60 and fo across to Napanee and then up to Goshen from the south. it is 2 lane highway but not bad--can't remember the numbers and don't have a map handy. you have to zig sag a little

Go thru Chicago in the middle of the day or, late at night. But, I recomend somehow staying off the Indiana Tollroad any way you can! For some reason, the section from west of South Bend to east of Elkhart is dangerous. Somebody dies every week in that stretch!

The best way is to head north to, and across, the UP of Michigan then back down to Goshen. However, if you don't have the time for that I would recommend I-80. It's not good but Hwy 30 is worse IMHO

John-- Went through Chicago last Wedneday with no problems. Stayed on I-80 and in the center lane and went through between 2 and 3 PM which was a little later than we wanted but had no problems at all. If you have any questions, give us a call on the cell!

Stay off of 30 it's nothing but lights and oddles of traffic. We live there in Northwest Indiana and try to avoid it at all costs
