On the Kenai River
We are in Soldatna, AK at River Terrace RV Park waiting on the salmon run to kick into gear. So far the count is around 5100 but the big run is later in July when the count hits 50,000! A few nice red salmon are being caught. Our group had a nice salmon dinner last night. Heading for the halibut tomorrow in Ninilcick. The RV Park is typical for Alaska--gravel parking, some wi-fi, no cable TV, full hook-ups. But it does have 50A power but I don't really need it.

Tim and Susan, we know you're having a wonderful time. Alaska is an amazing place to visit and the trip up and back is equally exciting. Be safe and catch lots of the big ones! Are you going out with a guide or have you found a special place on the bank to fish? We saw people standing shoulder to shoulder when they were fishing during the run.

I and some friends will be coming up to the Kenai next month, fishing for silvers and halibut. We are flying in and at the Rod & Reel for 9 days, looking forward to the fishing, hope it is good.

I am flying up to Sitka with a friend on Aug. 4th and going out for three days of fishing with Kingfisher Charters. Will be staying at the Kingfisher Lodge.

Status Report on Red Salmon Count--still down to about 15% of the average for this date. Aerial surveys show salmon gathering the Cook Inlet but they are not expected to enter the Kenai and other rivers in high numbers for a few weeks. I would estimate it takes about 8 hours of fishing to get one salmon at the current rate or you can get lucky and do it in 5 minutes. Kind of like Vegas slot machines! We are planning on staying thru the first week in August. So the fish can either wait till we leave or head up the river.

Did the fire in Soldatna affect any of the campgrounds in the area? Also how is the halibut count going in the Homer area?
