Good place to stay in/near Reno????

Folks, we are planning to be near Reno in early September. Any insight on a good place to stay for a few days? We'll be traveling with a well-behaved black lab, and NONE of us have visited the Reno area before. We don't need to be right downtown, would probably prefer to be on the outskirts.

We did find the Boomtown Casino and Hotel in Verdi, not too far from downtown (well, at least on the map), and it looked okay. Appreciate your help!

Send a message via MSN to Parrothead
Try Carson City and Minden. Several good CG there, nice casinos and close to Reno.
Happy trails................................

If you are planning on being there for Air Race Week, best get your spot reserved early!! If before then, might be OK.

A few of us from the MOC went to the BBQ rib cookoff almost 2 years ago and stayed at Gold Ranch RV resort in Verdi. It was a pretty easy drive from there to downtown Reno, and Boomtown was very close by to the park. The gas station there also had the best fuel prices in the area.

We've stayed at the Shamrock RV park. It is just north of the downtown area. It is sort of in an industrial area but is a very nice park. We stayed there for the Balloon Races and the Air Races. The balloons came right over our park. One landed just across the street from the park. We got a close up look. If you are wanting to stay there be sure and get a reservation if it is during a busy season.

If you don't mind driving a ways the Carson City area has some very nice parks as indicated by Parrothead. We had a MOC Rally at the Silver City RV Park. The folks there were very nice as is the park.

Hi CanDo,
We are at the Rivers Edge RV Park in Sparks, just outside of Reno. It is right on the river with a very nice black topped walking trail along the river that would be great for walking your well behaved friend.Blacktop pull thro's. The park is right in the flight path for the airport so it is a little noisy, but there seems to be less air traffic in the eves, we have never been bothered by the noise.Very quiet, clean park. Free shuttle to one of the nicer casinos in Sparks.( good food!) Never used the bath facilities so I don't know about them. Very friendly & helpfull managers. Laundry room. We've been here a year and a half, hubby is working construction here in Reno.AND... Lots of Montanas in the park. LOL

We lived in Carson City for 12 years before going fulltime June 2005.

We stayed in the Pinion Plaza RV campground while selling the house and it was nice - last time through they had changed the dogs rules and would not take our Rotwilier mix breed. (so we went to the Reno KOA)

Bordertown north of Reno does not have sewer hookups.

The KOA at the former Hilton in Reno - now called Grand Sierra Resort is nice we stayed there one night - nice wide slots all pavement (with plants between sites) and they have a nice dog run pen. If they haven't demolished it - there were plans to add condo's in place of the park last year - may still be in the planning stages.

If you want more info email us - since we lived here we can give you more info if you want.

Thanks to all who replied - you've given us many options. Now it's decisions, decisions, decisions! Will let you know what we decide and how it turned out - afterward, of course!

Hi,
FYI The Hilton KOA now the Grand Sierra has closed it's RV park, due to the big renovation going on there. It is going to be a huge project. The RV park we are in (Rivers Edge) has gotten a lot of the monthly residents.

We've been to the Silver City RV Resort a couple of times. That's where the rally was held last year. Official address is Minden, NV, but it's actually about a mile or so south of Carson City. We haven't stayed in any others in the area so cannot advise about them.

We like the Gold Ranch Campground in Verdi also. Even though near the freeway....it's still quiet and relaxing. Ask to be under the trees if possible. It is on the outskirts of Reno, on I-80 just west of BoomTown.

Chris and Dave, I hope you will have time to drive around Lake Tahoe and to stop at the various pullouts. The one we especially like is at a waterfall on the SW side of the lake. I forgot the name. And, if you can, from that same area, hike down to the mansion on the lake. For lunch on one of our drives around the lake we ate at The Post Office Cafe. I think it's in Carnelian Bay, on the CA side. We recommend it.

Also, if you have a chance, the Donner Party Memorial is worth a visit. It's on I-whatever, not too far west of Reno but on the CA side.

There is so much to see and enjoy in that area. Enjoy the trip!

Thanks Roamingusa for the update - we haven't been in the Reno area since last August.

Sad to see the Reno-KOA park bite the dust - but knew it would happen after reading the proposed plans by the new owners of the casino.

We've decided to try the Boomtown Casino. You all provided great info and we'll try to check out some of these places during our stay. The deciding factor was the offer in the Trailer Life Directory, of stay 2 nights, get one free.

As for Lake Tahoe, back in the days BC (before children), we lived about 4 hours away. After work on Friday we'd jump in the car and head North, get a hotel room one block off the strip, and head for the casinos. We were lucky enough to win more than enough to pay for our weekend jaunts. We also spent our honeymoon there (after 5 years of marriage), and got snowed in! Can't wait to go back to visit as "adults" to see how much it has changed. We used to eat at The Swiss Chalet; did it so often, they knew what we wanted and called us by name. Ahh, some memories you just never forget!
